Halifax County National Night Out announces guest speaker

Virginia State Police Deputy Superintendent LtC Robert Northern will speak at the event on Tuesday, August 4th.

Northern has served as Major and Deputy Director in the Bureau of Field Operations. He’s managed all aspects of statewide traffic and criminal law enforcement, motor vehicle safety inspection, motor carrier safety, and State Police Aviation and Med-Flight operations. Northern has also served in many capacities including Deputy Director of the Bureau of Field Operations, Division Commander of the Culpeper Headquarters. Lieutenant and Staff Assistant to the Director of the Bureau of Field Operations. First Sergeant in the Hanover/Henrico Area Office, Sergeant in the Bowling Green Area Office, and as a Trooper stationed in Fredericksburg and in Hanover County. He also served 7 years on the Executive Protection Unit, which provides security for the Governors of Virginia and their families. From 1990 until 1993, he was assigned to the Governor’s Office to coordinate Virginia’s anti-drug programs.

South Boston Police Captain Brain Lovelace is also reminding citizens that National Night Out has moved from Constitution Square in South Boston to Halifax County Fairgrounds. Events planned for the evening include a K-9 Demonstration from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, a tactical demonstration from the HCSO and South Boston Police Department, a kissing booth, and a dunking booth with local law enforcement officers from HCSO, SBPD, the Town of Halifax Police Department, and the Virginia State Police. The South Boston Recreation Department will provide games for the youths to play and win prizes donated by local business that are sponsoring the event. Lovelace also stated that there will also be bicycles and a tricycle given away from the all of the participating agencies.
