Centra Groundbreaking – Part #1

Back in May 2015, Centra had the groundbreaking ceremony and celebration for their new Danville medical center complex. I had thought we had done a PhotoCentral series on the event, but it looks like that never happened. Since the Centra construction is being talked about in the Southside News & Views Facebook group, let’s get started with some photos from the event.

All righty. Centra is building their medical center on Piedmont Drive below Sam’s Club. Parking for the event is at Sam’s Club, so we’re arriving now…

Centra will be running shuttle buses from the back part of Sam’s Club’s parking lot down to the groundbreaking site.

OK. So we’re here early. Like really really early. So let’s look at the surrounding area…

Down the hill from Sam’s Club, we find some of the last undeveloped land on the Piedmont Drive corridor. But as you can see, the big changes in elevation make this difficult to build on.

When we look towards the south, you can see how the elevation drops to the river’s level then back up quickly to the old Dan River Mills.

Looking westward you have this plateau, but even that drops off significantly when you get to the level that Centra will be building on.

You can see Bonner Middle School and the top floor of the hotel at the mall at about the same elevation. Our shuttle bus is here, so let’s jump aboard.

And we’ll be sharing a ride with the amazing ladies of Pittsylvania County. Left to right, we have Laurie Moran, Brenda Bowman, Arlene Creasy and Kate Berger.

And we’ve arrived at the groundbreaking area! It’s a little bit sloppy from recent rainfall, but we’ll get through it.

Centra’s showing off a lot of their equipment for today’s show.

And that’s the end of Part #1 from May’s Centra groundbreaking event. Part #2 and a lot more are coming up here on SouthsideCentral!
