The Dead Pennrose Mall – Part #2

The adventure through Reidsville’s Pennrose Mall is continuing here in Part #2 of our PhotoCentral series. We tried to get inside the mall in Part #1 but the first entrance we tried was locked. We’ll make it inside in this article.

Cover me, I’m going in.

I’m trying not to laugh at these photos.

If you’d like today’s newspapers, forget it!

Your call can not be completed as dialed… because the handset has been ripped off of this payphone. Yes, I said payphone.

This payphone has a handset, but there was no dialtone. I wasn’t surprised.

No, that’s not a door. I have no idea what happened there. Oh yeah, look at the beautiful drop ceiling in slight need of repair.

We’re heading up towards the old JC Penney location. Notice the red and green striped Christmas banners hanging from what’s left of the ceiling. Or they could be safety caution stripes. Please note the buckets… that will be a theme.

The door at the deceased Peanut Shack is out of order (how can a door be out of order?). The deceased Peanut Shack is also out of order.

Here’s the former location of JC Penney. I have no idea how the strips of paper on the other side of the glass doors got torn at the bottom.

Either the mall maintenance staff ran out of buckets or they just don’t care anymore. I’m assuming there is a mall maintenance staff. That’s probably not a good assumption to make.

After seeing this, I’m leaning towards “they don’t care anymore”. I’m sure nobody walks up here, and the water on the floor is a slip-and-fall lawsuit waiting to happen. That being said, it’s a nice little seating area here, complete with a fake azalea tree and an ashtray.

Are you laughing? Are you crying? I’m still doing both. Part #3 is coming up next here on SouthsideCentral!
