PhotoCentral: Inside the Danville Family YMCA

As promised from our Business After Hours PhotoCentral, we’re going to take you on a tour of the new Danville Family YMCA. The new facility opened in September and this was my first time visiting. Let’s take a look around.

The YMCA is at 215 Riverside Drive and along Danville’s Riverwalk Trail.

The Y has a regulation sized basketball court. They have open gym hours and their own youth basketball league.

This is their child watch center. Members have a safe, supervised place for the small children while they work out.

This is an amazing pool. They use recapture methods to take the humidity out of the air to help heat the water. 84 degrees in the water and out. They have open lap swimming, water aerobics and physical therapy here.

Donations from the community and foundations helped to build the new facility.

40 cardio machines and lots of other workout stations here. The Y also offers personal consultation with certified physical trainers.

Here’s the large free-weight area.

Here’s another look at some of the machines.

The inside track above the basketball court is for running and walking. 20 laps around is one mile. It’s an easy and convenient way to get your exercise in.

Sarah Folmar and the staff & volunteers always have a smile on their face.

SouthsideCentral strongly encourages you to visit the new YMCA facility and take a tour. For the rest of January, they’re waiving the $50 joiner fee if you bring a case of bottled water to donate to God’s Pit Crew. Join the Danville Family YMCA. You won’t regret it.

  • The “large” free weight area is actually ridiculously small for a facility that large. Not a lot of equipment either. I think there was like 1 set of dumbbells and 1 power rack. No rubber floor/platform for deadlifting. If you want to do cardio, it’s a great place. There’s about a million treadmills/ellipticals. The free weight space seems almost like an afterthought. I was kind of disappointed.

With money so tight and decent jobs so scarce, are the fees set so that your average citizen can belong? Or is it the same old story of just helping the rich?
