OddsMakers! (12/25/2014)

Who pulled the big chalkboard out of the closet? Ho Ho Ho! Christmas Day OddsMakers!

All righty… Let’s see what proposals are on the board.

Ah hah! I see a theme here. “Things that could happen in 2015”. Nice. Let’s get to work.

“Danny Marshall has an opponent in 2015” – Danny Marshall hasn’t had a strong opponent since Adam Tomer six years ago. He didn’t blink against Seward Anderson in 2011 and ran right past Gary Miller in 2013. Honestly, who’s left in his district to try to beat him? If we get a repeat candidate, they’ll lose again. Marshall’s popular and effective in the General Assembly… and he doesn’t mind bucking his own party when it’s the right thing to do. Local Democrats aren’t very well-organized nor productive, so we’re giving only a 24% chance that Marshall will have a real opponent in November (Mary Martin types of candidates aren’t real). NEXT!

“Danville City Council authorizes another Tobacco Commission Job Bust repayment in 2015” – Macerata Wheels is running out of time, and so is Danville Hybrid Vehicles. You’re on the hook, Danville residents! 100% chance of this happening. What? Today is Christmas Day? Yes, I believe in Christmas miracles. Fine. Since I’m in the holiday spirit, I’ll knock that down to a 99% chance. NEXT!

“Halifax County announces a new economic development with 100+ jobs in 2015” – The heat is starting to build slowly under the Matt Leonard version of the Halifax County Industrial Development Authority. The last big hit for the IDA came back in 2011 with Faneuil’s 150 job call center for Dominion Power. In a stupid move, the IDA fired Jeff Reed who immediately landed on his feet 50 miles away. He landed a good-sized job announcement within a year. Halifax County has carved out an interesting niche with their furniture coating center, but all that has come out of that so far is “companies are showing interest”. Leonard and his crew still have the support of his board of directors and the county government, but they’ve got to produce soon. When Martinsville, Appomattox and Danville are all making real announcements, that’s putting the pressure on Halifax County. They’ve been dancing with a watercraft maker lately, so I’m going to be optimistic and give this a 31% chance of happening. NEXT!

“Walmart Express to open Chatham area store in 2015” – I’ve heard a little bit about this happening so far. I’ve got nothing definite on it at all. Logistically and logically, it makes sense. you’ve got a very underserved grocery and general merchandise area that’s right off a major highway. About six years ago, Walmart considered the Blairs area for a full-size store but that fell through when the company started to slow down their full-size store growth. They’ve aggressively started building the Neighborhood Market and Express store concepts. The Walmart Express store in Yanceyville has been a big success and Yanceyville & Chatham are very similar. When you combine that with Highway 29 and the proximity to Gretna, it just makes sense. As I said before, I’ve only heard rumblings on this. However, it makes enough business sense that I’m giving it a better 1 in 4 chance of happening. 26% on the board, please.

That’s it. Let’s look at the final board.

As Tony Kornheiser would say, OddsMakers is 100% over! We’ve got more coming up on SouthsideCentral.
