Tanks (For Nothing!)

If you haven’t seen a trend from the AAF Tank Museum, you’re not looking very carefully.

Here’s a surprise for you. Even though the AAF Tank Museum said that they’re packing their stuff and heading out of Danville, that’s not going to happen.

We told you more about the Tank Museum before, too.

Well, well. One of our awesome SouthsideCentral readers tipped us off on why the proposed move just hasn’t quite happened yet. Well lookie there, that’s 10,000,000 reasons that the move fell through. No matter what the Tank Museum’s representatives say, I’ll telling you that move to Ohio is deader than disco. But wait, it gets better!

Tank museum battle: To move out or stay?

(Register & Bee article, paywall may apply unless you break through it)

I can’t believe what I’m seeing. Pittsylvania County & Danville are splitting the bill for a $6,000+ study on a “How To Make Your Museum Better” study? I’m having a hard time trying to think of a bigger waste of money, folks. Anyway, the study proposal passed the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors last week, so Danville will kick in their half. Lovely.

Hey, Tank Museum. You’ve now got Danville & Pittsylvania County spending money on your behalf on a study to teach you what you should have figured out a long time ago. You know, things like “Getting involved with the community” or “Advertising”? Maybe “Lowering your admission costs” or “Doing events to salute the local veterans”? How about “Being grateful for any help that you can get?” or a simple “Being friendly”?

So after all that, what do the owners say (through their spokesperson son, of course)?

Gasser said the study’s results will not have an impact whether the museum will stay in Danville.

Stay Classy, Tank Museum. After a “screw you” line like that from them, here’s an idea for Danville City Council. Yank the funding for this study. Make a statement that Danville is glad to provide help like this only for businesses that have a good working attitude towards the Danville region. Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors, you can do the same thing.

The giant no brainer IMHO would be cross promotion with the D Day Memorial. Put a tank appropriate to the time up there. Give a $3 discount with a ticket purchase there the same day (and get them to agree to the same). Maybe even get the casket museum in on the act since they have a military room iirc.

  • They’re open 12 hours/week for most of the year (6 hours in winter). There’s no heat or AC so for at least half the year the building can be sweltering hot (summer) or freezing cold (winter).

    Here are my recommendations:
    1. be open more hours
    2. Get some heating/ac

Neither will cost anywhere near 10 million dollars.

    That will be $6000.
