There is no “Purge”

Think for yourself. Remain calm. All is well. Quit acting stupid.

Danville’s George Washington High School is under attack from a stupid rumor and the stupid rumor has won the battle.

Supposedly, there was supposed to be “The Purge” at the school today and tomorrow where students were going to pretend they were in that bad movie and kill other students just for fun.

SERIOUSLY, PEOPLE! DO YOU EVEN THINK THAT SOMETHING LIKE THIS IS EVEN POSSIBLE? GAH!

Let’s call up a Big Board of Smacking Everybody Upside The Head With Common Sense…

  • If you actually think something like this would be possible, you’re an idiot. But anyway, do you think that the offenders would use social media and email to spread this Evil Plan? NO! If somebody wants to “purge” the school, they’re not going to advertise it.
  • “The Purge” was a movie. Movies are fiction. Every July 4th, do you think that aliens are going to invade Earth and Jeff Goldblum is going to upload a computer virus to save the day? I mean really… Aliens that advanced and they don’t use Norton?
  • This stupid-ass rumor is today’s equivalent of pulling the fire alarm from back in the 80’s or calling in a bomb threat in the 2000’s.
  • Number of schools that burned down from fires or exploded due to bombs? ZERO!
  • This rumor is a stupid way to cause panic and fark up a school day. Get it? These kids beat everybody that cried out “OH MY GOD IT COULD HAPPEN SO I HAVE TO GET MY CHILD OUT OF THERE NOW!”
  • If you’ve repeated these rumors, created a new one or said “It must be true, I heard it from (somebody)”, you are just as guilty as the original dumbass who started this purge crap.

GWHS and Danville Public Schools are safe. Nothing is going to happen today nor tomorrow, nor in the future. We have very competent law enforcement and security personnel who can handle anything thrown at them. The only things that needs to be “purged” from this incident are the people who started these rumors and spread the rumors. They need to be disciplined hard and quickly for their disruptive antics and need to be made an example for the next idiot who thinks about trying this. Here’s the problem with that… thanks to the dummies who have spread this rumor and the ones who have ridiculously panicked, this plan worked perfectly.

That’s just damned sad.

I went to pick my grandson up for alergy related problems, and it took me half an hour to get him. Parents were all in the hall ways waiting to pick their children up. There were car loads of police there. Why were all those cops there if there wasn’t anything to this?

  • Scott Eanes

Thanks for saying what a lot of people wanted to say. Its just crazy for people to react and run to the school. I’ve never seen a killer advertise their intentions to kill. Thanks Bruce

    • My pleasure. Or as I often say “I live to serve.” 😀

      • Devin Alford

The fact that the rumors exist is enough to credit the fact that it IS possible. Don’t be naive. True, the government nor the school would sanction such an event, but nobody has the right to say its impossible. You’re an idiot for passing it off without hesitation of risk. Your logic is flawed. Remember columbine? If you think that a handful of students can’t bring guns to school and shoot someone then you are the idiot. I personally have loved ones in gw and rumor or not, I’d feel safer knowing they weren’t there during this event. People are capable of anything. Your blog is bias and highly opinionated. People want facts when it comes to something like this, not someone calling everyone an idiot that doesn’t discredit the rumor.

        • You’re quite correct. It is my opinion and I stand behind it.

School buses and private transportation have killed more students than school violence. What’s the solution to that? Where’s the outrage and panic for that?

You’re welcome to your opinion and I’m glad to give you a place where you can express it.

I’m standing behind my article 100%.

          • Devin Alford

Just because school bus deaths are much more common than school violence doesn’t mean school violence is non-existant. All im saying is, the name calling is a bit lowly and immature conaidering people have loved ones that go to gw. It is their natural reaction to worry and not pass this up as mere rumor. Does this make them an idiot or stupid? No. It makes them human. It means they care. Do you personally have friends or family that attend gw? Something tells me you dont. If you do, its sad that youre prideful enough to shrug this all off rather than show concern for those people.

            • Nobody said it was non-existent. The probability is so remote that the public chooses not to super-secure and lock down school campuses completely.

Sure, that’s a natural reaction. And that’s my point with the article. Weigh that “natural reaction” against the situation and don’t resort to panic.

          • anonymous

You cant just decide oh this wont happen. Dont you think parents of Columbine said the same thing every day before the tragedy occurred? This world is full of evil i applaud the parents picked up their kids. Guess you werent among them huh. Its better to be safe then sorry

            • It’s better to destroy the power to “stop the world” that the stupid people who start and spread rumors like this have. I say your argument fails on this one because of the sheer lunacy and Infinite Improbability of this rumor.

Sure, we can eliminate all possibility of school violence by locking the campus down with razor wire fences and completely searching everybody that goes on the property. Why hasn’t that solution been proposed?

        • Wendy Lawrence

          I agree Devin!!

        • joan leonard

Thank you…My thoughts exactly….Better safe than sorry.

  • Rumors going around Bonner too.

    • Devin Alford

Thank you anonymous. My point exactly.

      • anonymous

Your welcome man, i realize that yes this may just be a social network ploy but these are our children and we cant just sit back and say “Ha those stupid kids these days itll be ok.” Whether it doesnt happen or not Safety is my #1fault priority for my children and if that makes me an idiot then im the biggest idiot in danville

        • anonymous

Are you listening to yourself??? My argument fails? So im supposed to trust this is lies and trust my kid is safe?? Right. In this world the only ones you can trust is God and family and if i were an eight year old kid frightened out of my mind id want my parents to pick me up.

          • If your eight year old is frightened out his mind by this, you need to handle that with them by explaining that the security is in capable hands.

There’s more of a chance that he’ll be hurt on the school bus or in a car.

        • Nobody said “Ha those stupid kids these days itll be ok.” The police and security people handled the situation perfectly and nothing happened.

You’re putting up a strawman argument.

          • anonymous

Its a figure of speech i used. You said and i quote “if you think something like this could happen your an idiot.” Strawman argument or not you cant take these threats like a grain of salt. Have you seen how many schools had killing sprees? Malls? Airports? I dont trust my kids lives with the government officials

          • anonymous

And i dont trust the security and neither does my daughter when it comes to this.

          • Kevin

Except you said earlier that the irrational public response was what forced the police to handle this in this way. Specifically, “They have to put on an expensive show of force so stupid people who panic at cap like this feel safe.” As it happens one can only know for certain if a threat is genuine if A.) The person or people making the threat have a credible ability to carry it out. B.) The person either does it or doesn’t. Any other assumption is just that.

        • Devin Alford

We will see how much my argument fails the next time a kid brings a gun to school and runs massacre. You clearly forget that columbine and the va tech murders happened and were very much real. You probably shrugged those stories off too huh? Way to avoid the question of whether you have friends or family in gw there blog master. I’ll leave you be though. You seem to know it all. These readers have people they care about in that school and if you keep calling them idiots for caring, then in the end the only thing you’ll have left is your Rude and one sided blog. Turtlecorn, out.

          • anonymous

Lol be easy turtlecorn i applaud you, there really is intelligent life on earth.

          • So what do you want to happen if this same situation happens next week? The same reaction of school disruption for multiple days?

          • Yes, I have plenty of friends there. Sorry, missed that one. And sure. we’ll count those number of victims against the ones killed by school transportation. That analogy holds.

We have a way of dropping the probability of school violence to the level of winning the Powerball jackpot 3 times in a row by completely locking down the school grounds and a complete search of everybody and everything. I mentioned that before. That would go to the ultimate “Better safe than sorry” argument. What say you on that?

      • PurelyM

I could give a rats ass about anybody in that damn school. They’re all hoodlums and low lives who’ll never live up to anything but perfecting the mcdonalds burger recipe which would probably be slapping extra cheese on that b*tch. That school either needs to be burned to the ground or be renamed as “mental health institution for future people living off the peoples taxes who’ll eventually drive the city of danville into what some people may call a sh*t hole.” As of right now all I see is shit and all it needs is a big of enough hole to put it all into. Let’s say dan river for example. Or ship them to Blair’s where nobody gives a f*ck.

  • Air Hall

I will never read your site on anything on it ever again. After reading your opinion. It just shows how highly naive, ignorant, your lack of reality, and how you have no Sympathy for the students and parents. Rumor or not YOU DO NOT KNOW THAT!!!! I have lost respect for whoever you are. Devin Alford you have very strong points. Maybe you should be writing for this page.

(Editor’s Note: Well, that didn’t take long. The IP address associated with this poster just came back to SouthsideCentral. That’s not conclusive proof, but it’s funny enough to note it.)

    • anonymous

What i want Southside is just for a better school system and these “purge” peoole real or fake to be stopped. For us to be able to live with the small worries and not have to be afraid to put our kids on the bus. The school system hasnt been perfect. Walmart has more security then our schools

      • anonymous

I understand your argument and i halfway agree with you but we are all different and we have to go with our gut and as parents take different approaches to our methods. I cant tell you that your wrong and i can’t say your right but lets just hope it is a rumor.

  • K. Bennett

There are at least 2 elementary schools in Danville that aren’t letting their children play outside on the playground tomorrow because of this ridiculous nonsense.

  • Jerry

SC is probably right. Saying that….I do tend to agree with the commenters that a child is your most precious gift. While it may seem rational to just sit back and laugh at what seems to be a prank, I can understand the sentiment of some parents that are worried.

  • heather

I agree most wouldnt spread the rumors if it was going to truely take place….but how many times has someone accidentally found out a plan and didnt think it would happen, kept quiet, only to wish after the fact they would have stepped up and possibly saved innocent lives. As a parent in todays society…lets not be unrealistic….some people, even kids, are pure evil. I would rather be safe than sorry…
This wasnt at my childs school but had it have been you dang right, I would be worried and rightfully so!

  • common sense

War of the worlds. 1938. Ring a bell?. One way to know who the idiots are that believe this crap. Bring backvforced sterilization.

  • Anonymous student

Guys I go to these schools systems I’m a student kids do it all the time it’s gonna turninto two nerds slap boxing in the bathroom
The first one crying and it’s over.. Duh

  • Centurian

Bruce you are absolutely correct. Rumors and ridiculous facebook posts need to be ignored. Could it happen? Sure and a meteorite could hit the school also. These rumors are for disruption purposes only. Several bring up Columbine. Well guess what? Neither of these students called or posted their intentions. In all the bomb threats over the years has a bomb ever been found? Of course not. Parents would do better to teach their kids not to be afraid of every ridiculous statement they see on the computer! Wow, Cant believe people would even consider this pure crap as being true. We are raising a nation of paranoid wimps…..

  • kristin

Sadly I do think the kids in this town are stupid enough to try it. They are stupid enough to do everything else they do so why wouldn’t they be stupid enough to try to do this.

  • BGPEJ

In response to SouthCentral’s very vague statistical “proof” that people are “idiots if they believe this rumor to be true” and “the kids have a better chance of being harmed in a bus than in a school violence situation”, I have this to say…

Overall, in terms of the U.S. Or let’s even say the world, the chances of your child attending a school and there being some sort of school violence situation is very slim to none, might even mimic the odds of winning the lottery. And yes, the odds overall of your child being in a vehicular accident en route to school is probably larger.

But consider this, it’s a known fact that an airplane is the safest form of travel. Which means on any day the odds of you dying in plane are far fewer than you dying in a car accident. But, on the day you decide to travel, there’s a bomb threat. Now regardless of whether that bomb threat is true or not OVERALL planes are still the safest form of travel, and that one plane blowing up in the sky isn’t going to change that, but on this particular day and for that particular flight, the odds of THAT plane going down have greatly increased because of that threat. Now, maybe not to 100%, but if there’s a 25% chance that THAT particular plane has a bomb on it are you going to risk your life because OVERALL planes are the safest form of travel?

My point is this, because there is a rumor there is a cause for concern. And nobody’s an idiot for taking a precaution. Now maybe there’s more of a chance that it won’t happen, but let the weatherman say there’s only a 40% chance of rain and everybody and their momma will have an umbrella because rain is mentioned in the forecast and they’d be smart to do so.

  • Anonymous

Thanks to BGPEJ. Very well said!! Our children are our most precious gifts and our responsibility is to protect them!

  • Local Business Owner

Wow, emotions are running high on this story.

Here is my interpretation in Bruce/SouthSideCentral’s opinion.

Is there a risk that something could happen at any school in the US tomorrow? Yes.

Is there a greater risk because of this Purge rumor. Perhaps, but read my next point.

Is that risk dealt with effectively already? Yes, more personal is on hand today and tomorrow. In fact you could say that because of this and the awareness all of these rumors have raised, that tomorrow would actually be a really poor day to select to attempt anything, thus making tomorrow safer than most other Fridays.

Why shouldn’t I as a parent go to school to grab my child in the middle of the day? Because you give rumors power. Because your reaction actually works against the added personal effectiveness. Imagine someone yells fire in a giant movie theater, (when there is no fire) and because of that 1-2 people per theater goer RUSH to the scene and try to crowd inside. Does that make the theater goers safer? No, it causes more panic and more chaos.

Rumors are just that, until adults start acting on them to give them power. The parent’s reactions are causing more kids to think about doing something to be “cool”.

The fact of the matter is that there is risk of events occurring at anytime, at anyplace. While I have not seen the movie yet, the trailer for the first movie seems to show people targeting victims in their HOME. You know, where those parents who are over reacting want to keep their kids, with no staff, no police, no cameras and no procedure in place to protect those kids for such events.

The point of this article is that parents need to carefully consider the result of their actions. It is way too easy to cause panic by freaking out. By reacting, you are giving those rumors power and putting the fear of such events DIRECTLY in the mind of your child. Do you really think that will help them sleep better at night?

  • Branden

I went to that school and I must say the children that go there are outrageous, fights daily and the fact that most of the children going there are under educated and gang affiliated makes me wonder how naive you really are…

  • Centurian

Well written response. ANYONE who keeps their kid home tomorrow are feeding on fear and teaching their child to be paranoid. If we gave into any of these rumors kids would never get a day in school……..Hmm how about spreading a rumor that the “purge” will take place on anyone who stays at home? Just as ridiculous ……..come on people wake up.

  • J. Adkins

Do you have children, nieces, or nephews? Maybe friends that have children? Maybe some people did over react but havent we learned in the past to take everything as a possibility just to be on the safe side? I mean lets look at facts here….. Rumor of a terrorist attack on 911 (hum guess we should have over looked that one because it was stupid to pay attention otherwise). My point is there have been plenty of cases where you have idiots who advertise what they are going to do before they do it. I could list alot more than that but i do t think i need too because i am sure that there are alot of you out there who have recalled seeing on the news at one time or another where a child or adult has threatened and advertised to do something stupid and actually did it. Dont imply people are being stupid for being safe than sorry because they care about their children.

    • I didn’t. I implied people are being stupid by letting the panic influence their decisions. The “better safe than sorry” argument doesn’t cut it when it’s not applied equally to all potential hazards.

  • Sic Semper Tyrannis

Danville VA. ! Ignorant rednecks breeding Ignorant rednecks. Parents can not separate juvenile drama from real possibilities. The sky will fall next Tuesday ……

  • B

Lots of energy spent on social media today spreading falsehoods… wonder how much energy was spent talking to kids about what they learned today…..or yesterday… the amount of energy spent on rumors, innuendos, shootings (where none knows what really happened)…. boggles the mind

  • My daughter went to GW in the late ’80’s – early 90′ s . She said this type of thing went on a lot, but we did not have the social media then so it was pretty much rumored around the campus only. Unfortunately Columbine, Tech, Newtown have made us all fearful and many would rather err on the side of caution by keeping kids at home.

  • Jesse

    Dear Southside,
I’ve spent a few minutes reading your post as well as a handful of comments. My personal opinion of this particular blog post is that it is not only severely biased and filled with a highly opinionated word choices, but it also lacks any type of concession whatsoever. I understand supporting your own opinion but without showing any type of view from the other side I seriously cannot respect your writing and I feel most readers would agree. Especially after being confronted of how real the possibility is, you seem to completely ignore the opinions of your readers…this is beside my point. However unlikely this event would occur after the huge hype; if it were to, would I be surprised? no. The way you are writing and replying make it sound like you know with 100% certainty that nothing will happen in the future, when you 100% dont know that at all. Threats like this are not a game and shouldn’t be taken lightly, but taken as a THREAT. Not saying you should lock down the whole city or anything, but I’m sure you understand what I’m saying here. Several weapons WERE in fact found today hidden throughout different places around the Averett Campus, not very far from the high school. Also several pizza delivery people were mugged and another was maced. Furthermore one of the Subway’s was robbed. It’s highly unlikely that these were all coincidences, but I’m not saying they coundn’t have been. In this small-ish town, these occurrences are rare.

  • common sense

Aliens have announced they will be joining the purge today. Anyone not wearing hats made of tin foil will be subject to brain extermination. More information can be found at http://www.your-a-gullible-moron.com

  • The ones who started this rumor should be expelled

  • Keywanna

They found knives and guns at the school i got this straight from the police so yes this is real

  • John Pearson

I respected your site until this unprofessional post. You have no idea the pressures that fall on a school system and its faculty. Even a rumor must be taken with the utmost caution, because you cant underestimate the power of stupidity and stupid people. I was a student at Virginia Tech when the shooting took place. To see how parents placed the entire blame on the school andits President was disheartening to say the least. If even one person is dumb enough to follow through with this plan, student or not, the fallout to the Administration at GW would be disastrous. Your opinion is yours, and should be respected. However, to call people “dumb-asses” and “stupid” for taking precaution is out of line. There was a more professional way to state your opinion.

    • People who respond to idiotic rumors like this with panicking are the problem.

    • Belinda Ward

      I totally agree!!!

    • Jesse

We should all remember that this person is writing for a blog and nothing professional really… besides words under a title. To call this news is…. Hahahaha…. Hilarious. You should try working Fox News, I’m sure they’ll hire you on the spot.

      • Ahem. SouthsideCentral has better coverage and indepth features than any other local media. Thanks for your comments.

        • Jesse

Thanks for that random opinion, but I have a couple questions, are you a team or are you just Bruce? Also where are your sources, or are sources not required for blog posts?

          • Anything written under the SouthsideCentral name is written by me. There are no requirements for anybody to publish anything anywhere, but I hold SouthsideCentral to a high journalistic standard for news. My sources come from all walks of life. They are people who I trust and who trust me. My success rate is proof of my dedication. SouthsideCentral is more than a blog. It’s a fusion of news and opinion.

          • And it’s nice for you to ask these questions after you attack me. Ha!

          • Jesse

And I’m perfectly capable of understanding why you hold your own writing to it’s highest standard, I often do the same, however unlike you, I know how to admit that I’m sometimes wrong. Not asking you to because like you I can see the future and I just don’t see that happening today, tomorrow, or in the future. But I’m more than happy to continue stating opinions because that’s what this blog is all about…. Oh btw local radio confirmed the Subway robbery in Coleman market was by two men who stole a red jeep Cherokee from Greensboro, fled, and left the vehicle and entered into a grey mini van.

            • Oh, I have admitted when I was wrong and I make that clear. My worst one was when I reported a DUI charge against a police officer. Two police sources independently confirmed the story which met the guidelines for publication. They were wrong. In the category dropdown, look for “Errors & Omissions” and you can find it.

SouthsideCentral is more than opinions, my friend. Remember that.

          • Jesse

Okay sounds good! Well I’ll leave you be for now, but before I go I sincerely invite you to google literary concession, just review it maybe, because as a journalist I know that you must know how important concession is to an article and how social media has slaughtered its appearance in many current articles. Nevertheless, concession is professional journalism, isn’t it buddy. Happy Blogging ✌️

  • Sheena Garrett

I have never read anything on your site before today, and this will be the last thing I read here. The only fact I gained from reading this “article” is that you are an arrogant douchebag. Sad what we have representing Southside online for the world to see.

  • You must not be dealing with kids that have heard this and are scared! So glad God gave you the gift of telling the future! Could you tell me when Jesus is coming back?

  • Ernie

While I agree that this is very likely nothing to be concerned about. I think your statement of “GWHS and Danville Public Schools are safe. Nothing is going to happen today nor tomorrow, nor in the future.” is not the best statement. That statement is a lot like the Titanic was unsinkable.

  • A Parent

To be honest the only way there could be a purge in any school would be if we as parents have guns or allow our children to grab a gun, knife or weapon from our house before they leave for school. So if you as a parent aren’t paying attention to your child there should be more fear there then at the school. Truth be told I would have picked my child up to. Not because of the “purge” but because I don’t have enough trust in a lot of these parents now a days to pay attention to what their child takes out the house. This is a high school we are talking about. So if parents take control of their children we wouldn’t have to worry about random rumors like this based on a dumb movie children shouldn’t be watching and know about in the first place common sense.

  • Raivore

Lol,i just find it a bit entertaining honestly. I understand where everyone is coming from I honestly do because i’ll pick up my kid too.I mean seriously saying that “The Purge” is going to happen is pretty much saying that this world is going to end. We’ve heard crazy shit through out our lives about the world is going to end but you people didn’t jump for that what so ever. @Kelly if they found a gun at the school that doesn’t mean that the kids brought it they need to be asking the cops if they dropped their guns let along said if you parents are stupid enough to leave a gun where kids and reach it that is your own fault and you fail as a mother and father. I don’t understand is why this school don’t have guards checking kids left and right like my high school did I mean honestly Albany High School had top guards metal detectors wands and all and one little beep they search you. Even If this school have guards searching kids for weapons if a kid some how got by you should blame the corrupted officer. @Anonymous what the heck would a eight year old be doing in high school? >.<

    • Clearly, we need 5 sets of metal detectors and each level has a strip search. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

      • Raivore

I agree with you xD There should be some kind of metal detectors or something should be no reason why kids are “bringing weapons” in school >.>

      • Raivore

Here we go You parents are so concerned about “guns and knives” but did you forget that everything is a fucking weapon you can stab people with pencils, pens, books, and top that off you can go to the janitor closet and make fucking bombs out he the equipment they got there spray people in the face with the cleaning supplies. Get real people and think about how bad school is every fucking day your kids walk into you people are idiots to make a big ass panic out of nothing. Like @AParent said it’s not that i’ll be taking my kid out because I can’t trust some of you idiots. Y’all can trample my kid push and shove them make them fall into roads etc because of your stupidity. This human race is such a inaccurate source.

  • Tim

posted on your more recent story, but I think it is important point – last year Sheriff Taylor gave speechs saying there were dangers and threats and kids and parents could no longer be trusted. It was a fear speech to get people to feel a need for his safety program. He has stoked fears for months and now this is the logical result.

Do we want to live in a community of paranoia and fear?

I do not and because of that I say these rumors are lies and you have nothing to be afraid of.

We should see some city officials stand up and say the same and reassure people.

  • Informed

Sheriff Taylor did not induce fear and paranoia. Not to mention this incident is allegedly occurring in the city. Sounds like a personal agenda from Tim against the Sheriff. Nothing more, nothing less.

  • kremmons

Better to be safe than sorry. Violence has been going on in schools for many many years. Who’s to say that this can’t really happen. People committ violent crimes one after another all the time. The only difference is that if something does happen its not legal. So technically ” the purge” could happen.

  • Justin

Well people had to take precautions. It’s not like school shooting have happened before or anything.
It’s all about risk, and risk is there. It was a threat and it should be taken seriously, like sandy hook and columbine west.
Don’t call it stupid for people overreacting because there is a possibility it could happen. Social media is a big tool and some people do use it to spread messages, they could easily use a VPN and hide theirself. You are very ignorant of the severity of a threat, threats like those are illegal and threats could lead to actions. It was right for people reacting the way they did. If there was a threat of someone harming my child I would keep them away from it.

    • J. Adkins

I have to agree 100% because what alot of you who are posting negative comments about parents overreacting is you seem to forget that we as parents know that their are parents out there who dont pay attention to what their kids are doing, there are kids out there who copy stuff they see on tv and hear about other people doing, and lastly there are people stupid enough to brag about what they are going to do before they do it. Taking all of this into consideration was there the possibility of a purge probably not but was there the possibility that there was maybe one or more kids planning on doing something to harm others most likely yes ( which that is a possibility everyday i admit). Was it a possibility that some stupid kids thought it would be funny to see what happens if they done this heck yes! But as parents you have to take everything serious when it comes to threats because we dont want harm to come to our children IF WE CAN prevent it notice i say if because we cant stop everything.

  • […] My original article was tough and harshly worded. I don’t regret that one bit. It was my opinion and apparently the opinion of a lot of […]

  • […] I wonder if people were searching about those stupid “Purge” rumors? […]
