OddsMakers! (7/7/2014)

The chalkboard’s ready to go. Let’s make some predictions and you people forget about one of the last ones that I made, ok?

If you “LIKE” SouthsideCentral on Facebook, you’ve already gotten a BonusCentral look at today’s chalkboard. Hint Hint.

Well, let’s take a look at what I’ve got to make predictions on in this edition…

Oh boy. Only one of those looks like an easy one. Let’s get it started.

“Danville Public Schools will have a new superintendent hired and working before October 1st” – Hmpf. Hiring a school superintendent isn’t like hiring a call center employee (of course, both of those jobs seem to open up quite frequently). There’s got to be a job search done by more than just the school board, lots of people will apply, rounds of cuts will be made and all of that junk. The interim superintendent was given at least 10 weeks in that position, so that takes us out to mid-September. Maybe this new version of the school board will work together and find the Perfect Candidate quickly, but I don’t think it can be done by October 1st. Miracles do happen, but I’m going to give this a 29% chance of this happening.

“Somebody will get indicted for something related to some of the Job Bust issues in Danville before the end of the year.” – Well, well. I do know that criminal investigations are going on. They’ve been going on for at last a few months but I can’t get enough on-the-record sourcing to run with the story. We all know lots of money has not been used for its intended purposes so far, and I feel it’s only a matter of time before somebody has to answer to that in a court. Danville did get Richard Robinson tossed in jail for his Batolii Job Bust, so it’s likely that some charges from somebody will come out of what’s happening now. I’m thinking it’s so likely that I’ll go with 93% on this one.

“Danville’s Economic Development Office will make a new business announcement with more than 100 jobs before the end of the year.” – You know, all of the cards are in play for this. Telly Tucker, Danville’s new economic development director started working on July 1st. Linwood Wright hasn’t been sitting on his hands since Jeremy Stratton’s departure. Landing a big job announcement like this would inspire a lot of confidence in Tucker and put Danville back on the map for economic development. What could possibly go wrong? Forget that I asked that question. I like the idea simply because it would be great for public relations, but they’ve got to be careful. Any job announcement that turns into another Job Bust will sink Tucker’s reputation immediately. I still think it’s going to happen, so I’ll go with 71% here.

“Some prankster will cause Lots-O-Bubbles in the JTI Fountain before the end of the year.” – Let me make this perfectly clear. SouthsideCentral does not endorse nor approve of anybody tossing soap in the JTI Fountain. The city has to spend money cleaning the filters and god knows some people may get the idea that it’s a big bathtub with built-in water jets for their stinky-ass self. It is also not amusing to watch tons of soap bubbles build up and float around Downtown Danville, no matter how much you and I laugh about it. It is vandalism and it is bad, bad, bad! However based on the location that it’s in, all it takes is somebody to loft a foam ball that’s loaded with highly concentrated car wash soap into the fountain and the inevitable sudsy reaction will occur again. For this problem only, the JTI Fountain is an “attractive nuisance”. It’s going to happen over and over again no matter what the city tries to do to stop it. Security cameras, vandalism criminal charges be damned… 100% chance of it happening again before the end of the year. Yes, I will have an airtight alibi.

And there we go, let’s take a look at the finished OddsMakers board…

You know what to do. Tell me how much you agree with me in the comments, because I never get these predictions wrong.

More coming up on SouthsideCentral!

I think the new Board is going to stay close to home, perhaps even going with the interim choice on a permanent basis. The ten weeks was chosen for a reason. I see that as more like a 70% chance.

I’m not commenting on the second item.

My guess on #3 is that we won’t see anything at 100+ until 2015. Sometimes credibility means playing a little small ball and doing due diligence on the bigger fish. I’d put that at 30%

I tend to dislike 100% predictions, so I’d put the fountain at 80%. I also think the recent publicity may lead people to feel that as a prank it is played out. I would even go so far as to predict it more likely somebody will dye the fountain instead of putting soap in it.

Bonus prediction: What are the odds of a chain restaurant not named Zaxby’s announcing a restaurant in Danville before the end of the year? I’m going to put that one at 60%. 🙂

Do jobs promised by a company, Tobacco commission money given for those jobs and the jobs never showing up count for #3
