When A School Board Member Goes “Rogue”

This isn’t pretty, but it looks like the Pittsylvania County School Board is taking “How To Be Dysfunctional” lessons from the Board of Supervisors.

I honestly couldn’t name more than three members of the Pittsylvania County School Board if I tried. To me, that’s proof that they’ve got an excellent superintendent who gets the job done in James McDaniel. But there’s one member on the school board that seems to be going about things his own way…

Where’s the local accountability?

This is the second time that Wayne Robertson has gone the “Letter To The Editor” route in trying to start discord about things he doesn’t like. That would be acceptable except for the fact that Wayne Robertson was elected to the School Board and can easily find out the answer to his question.

I’ve got a strong feeling that Robertson already knows the answer to his question but he simply didn’t like that answer. It’s not like he doesn’t have access to the school system’s budget (because he passed it). It’s not like he couldn’t ask Superintendent McDaniel what is going on (because McDaniel works for the school board). On Robertson’s first attempt at pulling this trick, he was rightfully rebuked by the superintendent for grandstanding to the public. Obviously, Wayne Robertson paid no attention to that because he’s back on his public soapbox.

It’s pretty clear to me that Wayne Robertson doesn’t like James McDaniel much at all and this is his way of publicly undermining him. This is the wrong way to do that, but lots of people who don’t think for themselves will not recognize that. They’ll do the “Hell Yeah, This Guy Is Right!” standard reply and Robertson will continue to make a name for himself. He’ll also accomplish nothing with this except to add discord to a school system that’s doing a good job.

That’s not what Wayne Robertson was elected for.

My take on reading Robertson’s letter was a little different from yours. What I think he is saying is that the PUBLIC needs to know the full story on what happened with the funding in question–particularly how come accountability in the matter seems to have evaporated. In the absence of any newspaper interest, maybe this is something Southside Central should take a look at.

Buddy, if he doesn’t know and is incapable of finding out, he needs to immediately resign. This guy is the one who should be telling us, not asking us to find out.

The story in question never sat well with me. I had the same type of questions that he is raising when it happened. That said, he supported the way things were at that time. We have moved on. This is not close to being the proper way to handle whatever grievance he currently has. He should just come out and say what is on his mind, and he should come with the level of detail that a member of the school board should have. He’s actually more clueless than the guy on the city school board who didn’t understand what limited things could be discussed in closed session.

  • Sounds like Wayne is the only one not afraid to buck the system. Go get them Wayne!

Sorry this is NOT the way to handle things. He has a copy of the full investigation of the matter. There was no fault assigned because the only person to really answer the questions is deceased. End of story. The matter really lies with the inconsistent and ambiguous policies from the state. The only reason PCS was fined was because a CSB rogue chairman, who was on the board for years and approved all expenditures, suddenly doesnt agree and calls the state to look at policies. As anyone with half a brain knows when you call in the state on yourself it only leads to problems. Also it is important to note PCS never signed a check or in any way handled the money. All checks were written by the Pittsylvania Board of Supervisors. They wanted it that way. So if you want to point fingers be sure you are pointing them in the right direction.

Lee’s concerns are purely process as opposed to substantive. Centurion brings a sensible combination and perhaps some enlightenment.

It’s not process to say that he was in full support of what happened when it happened, but something went down at Gretna High School he didn’t like and he’s acting like a petulant teenager dragging up any garbage from the past in a tantrum evidently designed to sling mud everywhere.

  • […] Robertson believed that his concerns weren’t being heard by enough people, he proceeded to write letters to the editor that SouthsideCentral criticized him for. Although we respect Robertson’s passion for the school system with him being a retired […]
