Thumbs! (5/24/2014)

My goodness. It’s been a while since we’ve pulled out our Thumbs! Let’s continue the catch-up process…

Up is good. Down is bad. Like you don’t know that by now?

  • Thumbs UP! to Chris Jones and The Prizery’s Summer Theatre Project for completing a $25,000 crowdsourced fundraising goal. I’ve always been amazed at Jones’ fundraising skills and he pulled it off yet again this year. Now let’s work on getting the ticket prices down from $20+ per show so that it’s affordable for a family’s night out of entertainment.
  • Thumbs UP! to Danville’s Industrial Development Authority for securing a $25,000 loan for a local downtown business. The downtown streetscaping project went on for way longer than it was planned and caused a lot of traffic and pedestrian troubles. I’m quite surprised that no downtown business folded during that project. At least the Danville IDA recognized that there truly had been a problem and reached out to an existing businesses to give them the help that they needed to get back on their feet. I hope that Danville’s Office of Economic development is paying attention to this precedent.
  • Thumbs DOWN! to Merle Rutledge. This area’s least favorite race-baiting idiot tried to get a “letter to the editor” published about the suicide of a Bonner Middle School student that happened earlier in the month. Unsurprisingly, Rutledge got the facts wrong when he said that the child was being bullied at the school and was black. He went on in his letter to say that the child had been treated poorly because he was black and made insinuations that the child’s race was why it was being covered up. The child was white. Needless to say, nobody published Rutledge’s racist rantings.

That’s some Thumbs! to catch us up. More coming on SouthsideCentral.
