A 42-year old Eden man drowned while helping to save his sons from an undercurrent in the Mayo River on Saturday evening.

Glenn Elmer Hampton (42) drowned in the Anglin Mill Loop area of the Mayo River at 6:45 PM on Saturday night. According to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, Hampton was at the river with his wife, his 3 sons and a family friend. Hampton’s 9 and 10 year old sons were threatened by an undercurrent. Hampton and the family friend went into the river to rescue the children.
