60th District House Race – Update #3

Last Update: 60th District House Race – Update #2

So what’s changed in this race? Everything.

Dave Guill dropped out of the race this weekend leaving Edmunds by himself (for now). Let’s look at who could replace him on the ticket.

People with previously declared interests:

  • Ted Bennett – He’s already declined to run in this race once giving Guill the inside track. Does he have the desire to jump in the race with just sixty days to go? If he does, would he have a chance against Edmunds?
  • Brandon Hudson – Well, looky here. He just might have a chance to get in this race after all. Hudson’s a lawyer from Halifax and was overlooked in the nomination cycle. He deferred to Bennett and then Guill but now he’s the last man standing.

People that could pop up (no idea if they have any interest at all but are logically fit for this race):

  • Tom McLaughlin – He wrote Guill’s speech for him. He’s well-known in the area. He’s got the political philosophy and the attitude. Has not shown any political interest before, however.
  • Mattie Claiborne – Also has not shown any political interests, but has a strong community following.

OddsMakers of the Replacement Candidate: Ted Bennett 13%, Brandon Hudson 5%, None of the Above 2%, Nobody (default win by Edmunds) 81%

>>>>>

James Edmunds (R) – Enjoy your free pass into the House of Delegates.

_____________ (D) – What an implosion… disorganization reigns supreme here.

Thoughts: At least there’s no campaign contributions to return. 😀

Current vote prediction: Edmunds by default.

OddsMakers of a win: Edmunds 100%

what is the cut-off for entering the race as a candidate?

  • SouthsideCentral

    Found this…

§ 24.2-539. Party may nominate when nominee dies, withdraws, or nomination is set aside; duty of party chairman.

Should the nominee of any party die, withdraw, or have his nomination set aside for any reason, the party may nominate to fill the vacancy in accordance with its own rules. A candidate who has been disqualified for failing to meet the filing requirements of Article 1 (§ 24.2-500 et seq.) of this chapter shall not be renominated. No party shall renominate any person whose nomination has been set aside for fraud knowingly participated in by the candidate. The party chairman or chairmen shall promptly certify the name of any such nominee to the appropriate electoral boards and the nominee shall promptly comply with the filing requirements of Article 1 of this chapter.

thank you Southside for your research. now we wait for someone to step up.

  • from halifax

    Let’s see. The possible substitutes

Bennett- Quit before because he knew he would lose. Won’t get back in now. Disliked in Charlotte, viewed as over the hill in Halifax, unknown in the rest of the district.

Hudson- unknown and does not have the drive for a real campaign.

Tom McLaughlin- (Personal attacks edited out)

Mattie Claiborne- nice lady- totally unknown everywhere in the district but Halifax. Might get 30%.

    >>>>>Editor’s Note – I’ve got no problem with people expressing their opinions here but I draw the line at making personal attacks without signing off with your real name.<<<<<

I would love to see Tom McLaughlin run what a joke. Tom wouldn’t get as many votes as Dave Guill would have. The Democrats must not have really wanted the 60th district seat to put Dave Guill in as a candidate. Dave Guills first mistake was letting the idiot Tom McLaughlin write a speech for him. Dave Guill did exactly what the people of Charlotte County knew he would do Nothing. The Democrats in the 60th District are really a disorganized bunch. Dave Guill just put the last nail in his coffin for any political future he would ever have. Anyone thinking of jumping into this race surely will not have enough time left to do any serious campaigning. Im sure the Republicans in the 60th district are very happy today with Tom McLaughlin and Dave Guill if they are the best the Democrats have to offer i feel sorry for them. Tom McLaughlin please run everyone needs a good laugh.
