I’m not sure what to think of this. The 2103 parade was postponed due to weather so that messed things up for a lot of people who would have gone on July 4th. I know it’s got to be frustrating to not have the volunteers needed to make the event a success.<\/p>\n
But a $1500 loss really isn’t that big of a loss in the long run, and I wouldn’t think it would be enough of a one-time loss to throw away the chance of making 8 to 13 thousand dollars on a normal July 4th parade day.\u00a0 Already, the community is responding with crowdsource funding initiatives and I’m pretty sure that the department could easily make up any deficit with a simple fishbowl for people to drop a dollar or two in.<\/p>\n
In stead of cancelling the event on the spot, it would have been a lot better for the volunteer fire department to say “Hey. We’ve got a problem and we need help. We need volunteers and a little bit of money to make this big community event happen again.” I’m sure that the good people of Halifax County (and other areas) would pitch in to fill whatever gaps that are needed to keep this event going on for another year.<\/p>\n
Or maybe that’s what this “cancellation” was all about in the first place. It would be dirty pool, but it would be quite effective to watch the community respond and “miraculously” save this parade and day-long festival after this cancellation notification.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
