In July of 2008, Investigator Crystal Yeatts of the Halifax County Sheriff\u2019s Office and Kim Lester of the Halifax County Department of Social Services began a joint investigation of Lester Eugene Bowles, 50, of Scottsburg, Virginia, based on allegations that he sexually abused a six year old girl. On May 28, 2009, Bowles was tried and convicted of one count of Forcible Sodomy and one count of Aggravated Sexual Battery against a child who was less than thirteen years of age. On Monday, December 21, 2009, Bowles was sentenced by Judge Leslie Osborn on both charges. On the charge of Forcible Sodomy, Judge Osborn sentenced Bowles to sixty years with thirty years suspended. On the charge of Aggravated Sexual Battery, Judge Osborn sentenced Bowles to twenty years, with all but ten years suspended. Bowles was remanded to custody to begin serving his sentence. \u201cCases like these are among the most important cases we handle. They are also among the most difficult,\u201d said Assistant Commonwealth\u2019s Attorney Will Hamilton. <\/p>\n
In the course of investigating the sexual abuse charges, the Sheriff\u2019s Office discovered guns and gunpowder in Bowles\u2019 residence. Bowles was subsequently tried and convicted for possessing firearms and explosive materials after having been convicted of a felony. He was sentenced to ten years with five years suspended on those charges. All of the sentences are to be served consecutively, leaving Bowles with a total of forty-five years to serve in prison. \u201cWe\u2019re all pleased with the results\u201d said Hamilton. \u201cThanks to the hard work of law enforcement, social services, and the bravery of one young girl, Lester Bowles no longer poses a threat to the children of Halifax.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
