Braves third baseman Jordan Kreke ripped a two-run double in the second inning that stood up for the difference in the game. Danville and Bluefield are both 10-6, tied atop the East Division. The teams will battle for first place in tomorrow’s series finale at 7 p.m.

All the scoring the Braves would need came in the second inning. Singles by Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg and Robby Hefflinger put two runners on before a fielder’s choice by Daniel Elorriaga-Matra put runners on the corner. With two down, Kreke hit a lined shot over left fielder Larry Rivera and off the wall that scored both runners to make it 2-0.

After that, it was all Oberholtzer. He allowed a single in the second inning, two in the third inning, and one in the sixth, but that was all the Orioles could muster off the left-hander, who was Atlanta’s 2008 8th-round pick. He did not walk a batter in the game.

Surinach tossed a scoreless final two innings not allowing a ball to leave the infield. With one out, a runner reached on a Spanjer-Furstenburg error at first, but after a fielder’s choice, the Braves ended the game when Elorriaga-Matra threw out Corey Thomas trying to steal second.

Oberholtzer (1-0) became the first Braves starter to earn a win this season, going seven innings, allowing no runs on four hits with no walks and tied a Braves season-high with eight strikeouts. Surinach earned his first save with his scoreless two innings. O’s starter Jesse Beal (2-2) took the tough-luck loss, going 7.1 innings, allowing the two runs on seven hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

Spanjer-Furstenburg, who is now batting .469, was 2-3 with a run, and Hefflinger was 2-3.

The Braves finish this brief two-game homestand Friday night at 7 p.m. against the Orioles in a battle for first place. Left-hander Chris Masters (1-2, 2.79 ERA) will take the mound for Danville. It will be the first of two Faith Nights at Legion Field this season.
