On June 28th at 9:14 pm, a passing motorist contacted Halifax County 9-1-1 to report a structure fire at the NAPA Auto Parts Store at 5289 Halifax Road. The caller reported that the blaze was concentrated in the back of the building. The Halifax, South Boston and Liberty Fire Departments responded to find flames showing from the roof of the building. Fire Department personnel remained on scene until approximately 3 am to extinguish the blaze, which left the building a total loss. Halifax Police, Virginia State Police, Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and VDOT personnel were on hand to assist with traffic and crowd control. The southbound lane of Halifax Road from Sunshine Drive to Golf Course Road was closed for approximately 5 hours due to the fire.
\nOn June 29th at approximately 8 am, Halifax and South Boston Fire Departments returned to the scene to extinguish several small fires that had rekindled during the early morning hours. At 3:26 pm, the Halifax Fire Department was called again to extinguish a blaze that had rekindled near the center of the building.
\nAccording to Halifax Fire Chief Darryl Dawson, approximately 400,000 gallons of water was used to extinguish the blaze. Halifax Fire Department had 20 firefighters on scene with 4 trucks. South Boston Fire Department supplied 15 firefighters and 2 trucks, and Liberty Fire Department responded with 12 firefighters and 2 trucks. Personnel from the Halifax County Service Authority were also present to monitor water flow. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Halifax Police Department with assistance from the Virginia State Police and Halifax County Sheriff’s Office. No injuries were reported.
