He was in a 1991 GMC pickup truck and drinking beer. He had thrown three beer bottles out the window. He also had inside the cab of the truck, a .38 caliber revolver.

We’ve got a tragic story from Rockingham County (NC).

A 42-year old Eden man drowned while helping to save his sons from an undercurrent in the Mayo River on Saturday evening.

Glenn Elmer Hampton (42) drowned in the Anglin Mill Loop area of the Mayo River at 6:45 PM on Saturday night. According to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, Hampton was at the river with his wife, his 3 sons and a family friend. Hampton’s 9 and 10 year old sons were threatened by an undercurrent. Hampton and the family friend went into the river to rescue the children. The family friend was able to remove the children from the dangerous situation, but Hampton went under the surface of the water due to the current.

Hampton’s wife called for assistance while the family friend searched the river. Another man at the river was able to assist and together. they were able to retrieve Hampton’s body. The two men attempted CPR until emergency personnel arrived on the scene.

Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page was asked about the drowning and said “Rockingham County is blessed with rivers suitable for recreation, but on occasion, tragedy becomes reality. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Mr. Hampton”.

Bizzaro World comes to Rockingham County, NC.

From our friends at the Rockingham County (NC) Sheriff’s Office…

Christopher Smith was travelling on Highway 29 near Reidsville. He observed a truck parked by the highway and pulled his car over and in front of the truck. He asked to borrow the truck driver’s cell phone. At that time, Smith called 911 communications to say he had killed his family.
When the deputy arrived at the location, he asked for identification and inquired if Smith had any weapons with him. Smith said he had a shotgun and a sword in the trunk of his car and had killed his family.
After other members of the Sheriff’s Office arrived, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office was contacted. An execution of a search warrant for the Kernersville address revealed there were no such deaths at the location as Smith claimed.
Smith was taken to the hospital for evaluation, and later charged with FILING A FALSE POLICE REPORT. His bond is $1500 secured and a court date of August 17th was given.

I can’t add anything to this story, folks.

From our friends at the Rockingham County (NC) Sheriff’s Department…

Date reported: February 6th at 9:18 a.m.
Location of incident: Ashley Loop near Highway 87, Reidsville
Officer reporting: Deputy William Perdue

Utility workers complained of a man driving a blue mini-van riding back and forth near their worksite. The man was throwing limbs in the road, cursing workers and making obscene gestures.

The workers got the license plate number allowing Deputy Perdue to locate the man to discuss his alleged behavior.

Deputy Perdue reported the man had a strong odor of alcohol about him and was irate in his explanation of his frustration with utility workers. He was mad because he did not have power, and admitted his aforementioned behavior.

James Rex Nidiffer, 49, of 8953 NC87 in Reidsville was arrested on one count of Intoxicated and Disruptive. His bond was set at $1,000, before being confined in the Rockingham County Jail.

From our friends at the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department…

November 17, 2009
Felonious restraint

Reported: November 16th at 10:38 p.m.
Location of incident: beginning on Thorton Street in Eden
Victim: Cindi Sue Sutherland, 32, of 800 Thorton Street
Reporting officer: Deputy Mike Smith

Deputy Smith responded to Angel’s Bail bonding in Wentworth due to a disturbance. Upon arrival, he determined Cindi Sutherland was now at the magistrate’s office.

Melissa Seiler of Angel’s Bail bonding explained that David Lee Taylor and his mother Gladys Pullium had come to her bonding business. Pullium came inside to speak with Seiler about surrendering Sutherland on a previously signed bond. When Seiler went outside, she found Sutherland being held against her will in the car by Taylor. She explained to Taylor that he could not bring Sutherland to her office against her will and restrained. During this time, Sutherland escaped out the car and to the magistrate’s office as Taylor and Pullium fled the scene. A detective was called to the scene and was told of previous assaults by Taylor to Sutherland.

Following his investigation, Detective Billy Southard obtained warrants. Earlier this morning, Deputy Bill Wade located David Lee Taylor at his residence and placed him under arrest on charges of Felonious Restraint and Domestic Assault on a Female. His bond is $10,000.

Yep. I’m confused. You?

Hint: You know it’s going to be a funny story when the last line is “Alcohol was a contributing factor in this incident”.

From our friends over at the Rockingham County (NC) Sheriff’s Department…

Reported: October 31, 2009 at 10:06 p.m.
Location of incident: 670 Belton Road in Stoneville
Victims: Harold James Davis, 35, of 670 Belton Road
Amanda Evans, 20, of 670 Belton Road
Reporting officer: Deputy Mike Edwards
Reporting person: Justin Hickman, 27, of 664 Belton Road

Mr. Davis reported he and Miss Evans had returned home from taking kids “trick or treating”. When they entered the residence, they found a man asleep on the couch. One of the kids saw the man and started screaming, causing the man to wake up and leave. As he walked outside, Mr. Davis asked his neighbor to follow the man while he further searched his residence to make sure no one else was there.

Deputy Johnny Flynn responded to the incident and was able to locate the suspect as he was being followed by Mr. Hickman. The suspect was taken into custody and charged with Breaking and Entering the residence. Apparently, residents failed to lock their door before leaving. Nothing was determined stolen or disturbed.

Rogelio Bahena Bahena, 27, of 938 Galloway Street was given a bond of $20,000 and is also held as a detainee for INS. Alcohol was a contributing factor in this incident.

We needed a story like this to get our mind off politics, and it worked!

From our friends at the Rockingham County (NC) Sheriff’s Dept.

While watching a training film at football practice, Coach Bailey stated Joshua Hayes became disruptive with loud comments and cursing. The coach instructed “Josh” to leave his class, but he refused.

Coach Bailey called Principal Whitley. He arrived at the classroom and also instructed “Josh” to leave the classroom due to his behavior. He still refused to leave, causing the principle to call 911 for law enforcement assistance.

When Cpl. Martin arrived at the classroom, he asked the student to leave, but was met with a shouts of profanity. The student also became physically combative as Cpl Martin began to lead him from the room under arrest. He resisted the arrest and called out to others to join him as he increased his resistance of arrest. At that point Cpl. Martin used his Taser to stun the student who ultimately complied.

During the search incident to arrest, two baggies of marijuana were recovered with baggies causing the charge of Possession with Intent to Sell/Deliver Marijuana. “Josh” was also charged with Disorderly Conduct, Second Degree Trespass, and Resisting a Public Officer. His bond was set at $21,000 secured.

Let’s go over to Stoneville, NC to meet today’s honoree.

From our friends at the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office…

On July 30th, an Emergency Communications Dispatcher received a telephone call from a person using a cellular telephone. The unidentified caller stated he was going to assassinate the President of the United States. With available equipment, the call was determined to have been placed from a trailer park on Bob Trail in Stoneville. A deputy was dispatched to that area, but was unable to locate the caller. Meanwhile the United States Secret Service was notified of the call.

About 24 hours later another call was made by the same caller. A Secret Service Agent and joined Detective Steve Perkins in an investigation to find the person making the calls. Investigators ultimately went to 109 Abernathy Drive in Stoneville to interview Steve Lee Stone, 44, of that address. During that process, Stone became combative and refused to listen to verbal commands. Stone resisted arrest until Deputy Fred East used his Taser X26. Stone was then handcuffed and transported to the magistrate’s office.

Steve Stone was charged with 2 counts of Misuse of 911 System, Communicating Threats, and Resisting Public Officer. Sheriff Sam Page stated “We take all threats serious and was glad when this man was located. We often work with the Secret Service and fortunately, it is not ordinarily for this reason. I believe this is the first threat made against a President since I have been Sheriff.”

As soon as we find out about this guy’s sentence (his court date was yesterday), we’ll update this story. Thanks go out to Dean Venable, Public Information Officer at the RCSO, for getting this information out!

We’d like to write something funny to lead off, but you can’t beat the statement from the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office.

Dennis Wayne Fulk, 47, of 150 Wood Ford Lane in Stokesdale entered the Clerk of Court’s Office to pay money on his case from court. The clerk assisting Fulk had placed his case file on the counter. While conducting his business at the counter, Fulk asked the clerk to make a copy of a document related to his case.

When the clerk turned to the copier to make the requested copy, Fulk reached over the counter and did steal evidence, handwritten letter in case file…relevant to a criminal offense, a handwritten letter by the victim in a case…that was ordered into case file by Judge.

When the clerk turned back and asked about the document, Fulk denied taking it.

Detective Kevin Suthard investigated the crime and obtained a warrant for the arrest of Fulk. He has been served the warrant and has been given a $25,000 bond.

The crime was recorded by video camera.

From our friends at the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office…

(Madison, NC) – - Narcotics detectives with the Sheriff’s Office went to 571 Planters Road after receiving information about marijuana plants growing outside and behind a gray building. As investigators approached the area, they located two marijuana plants with a combined weight of about 22 pounds. They also discovered liquor still on the back porch of the residence in plain view. Inside the residence, there were seven jars of non-tax paid liquor, marijuana seeds and a smoking pipe.

David Ezekiel Kennedy, 20, of 571 Planters Road was charged with Manufacturing Marijuana.

David Michael Kennedy, father of David Ezekiel and a resident of 571 Planters Road was charged with Possession of Equipment Intended for use in the Manufacturing of Non Tax Paid Alcohol, and Possession of Non Tax Paid Alcoholic Beverage.

What’s that? You say you want to see a photo of the still? It’s Instant Request Time!

From the Rockingham County (NC) Sheriff’s Department…

On August 11th, Detective Steve Perkins obtained a warrant for James Michael Younger. The warrant was for the offense Indecent Liberties with Child and was served on that same date. A bond of $1,000,000 secured was set and Younger was incarcerated in the Rockingham County Detention Facility.

On August 12th, Younger attempted to take his own life by hanging. Detention personnel became aware of his attempt, and immediately removed him from further injury. He was given immediate assistance and was transported by emergency medical services to a hospital. As Sheriff’s detectives began their investigation of the incident, Younger was being treated for injuries sustained in the incident.

On August 14th shortly before 6 p.m. James Michael Younger, 52, of 491 Matrimony Road in Eden, died from the injuries he inflicted on himself in the hanging attempt.

Three incidents in 24 hours make for a lot of press releases…

First: A 15 month-old child was bitten on the shoulder, jaw and nose by a chained dog and recieved stitches in the Morehead Hospital emergency room. The owner of the dog was charged with having an non-vaccinated dog. The dog was taken to the Reidsville Veterinarian Hospital and placed in quarantine for rabies evaluation.

Second: The owner of the old Monroeton school property called deputies when he found three men loading metal equipment on the back of a truck. When the deputy arrived, he found 2 radiators already on the truck with four large file cabinets ready to be loaded. All of the property came from inside the building and returned to the owner and the truck was seized. Here’s where it gets funny… It seems that one of the guys asked the other two guys to help him move some stuff. He didn’t tell them that he was stealing it. Oopsie!

Gregory Leon Slade Sr. 35, of 1405 Hawkins Street in Reidsville was charged with 2 counts of Felony Breaking & Entering, 2 counts of Felony Larceny, and 2 counts of Possessing Stolen Property. His bond was set at $20,000 secured.

Third: A woman said that while she was driving on Oregon Hill Road at about 2:30 a.m. she noticed a vehicle behind her activating a white strobe light. She believed the car to be a patrol vehicle and pulled over the side of the road. The car behind her positioned his car like a patrol vehicle, but when he exited the car she noticed him to be wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans. The victim became fearful and drove away immediately, trying to escape. A short distance away, she found a mobile home park (Leisure Land). She turned off her lights and tried quickly to turn into the park, where she struck the sign to the park. Her car got stuck and the glass of her car had shattered. Two persons from the mobile home park came outside after hearing the crash and hearing the victim scream. They saw the suspect’s vehicle as he had followed her to the park. They watched as the suspect drove away.

The suspect is described as Hispanic or black male, about 5’10” tall, stocky build, short black hair, white t-shirt, blue jean shorts or pants. His vehicle might be a light colored Honda or Ford station wagon type car with a strobe light on the dash or under the rear view mirror. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Sheriff’s detectives at 336-634-3238. Anonymous callers can call crime stoppers at 349-9683 for a reward up to $1,000.

Thanks to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department for letting everybody know about these incidents.

On Wednesday, July 22nd around 12:30 in the afternoon, an Alzheimer’s patient had walked away from his home on Ellisboro Rd. After a brief search by the family, the Sheriff’s Office was notified and responded with the Project Lifesaver Care Trak Monitoring System. Once on scene, the Sheriff’s Office received a signal and the subject was safely located within 20 minutes of receiving the signal. The subject was treated by EMS and released to his family.
Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page said “We are grateful to have such a system. More people should be aware and utilize this quick, safe and economic tool to locate their loved ones in all types of environments who may suffer from disorders such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, and autism.”

Thanks to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department for providing this happy ending to a story that could have ended up with a very unhappy ending.
