As regular readers well know, I recommended Reidsville’s “Lucky City” as a good place to go. Well, not anymore because Lucky City has closed down.

I got an email from Debbie Moore on Friday saying that Lucky City was going to close that night. I was quite surprised and after some interviews, we found out that Richard Moore had gotten a “7 day intention to terminate” the lease and they had to get out. That’s quite bizarre because they had always paid their rent on time… so I’m trying to find out why the building owner (Dr. William Bradford) decided to get rid of a paying tenant.

Let’s get some things out of the way. Richard Moore pissed people off at times. He thumbed his nose quite regularly at “The Establishment”, and often came out on top because he was usually right. He started a “Reidsville Downtown Merchants” Facebook page after the previous one was deleted and proceeded to mock the downtown businesses in a fun way. He unofficially changed the name of Lucky City to “Reidsville Public Library” for no apparent reason, causing some confusion among people. He continued to have fun at the expense of local & county government officials. In short, it was “Richard being Richard”. You may not like the way he did things, but Lucky City was a quirky, successful business that added a lot to to Reidsville’s downtown. Unfortunately, it looks like Richard pissed off one too many people. I, along with many others, will miss their selection of beer and wine. I’ll also miss the group of friends I met that considered themselves Lucky City’s “regulars”.

We’ll probably never find out who orchestrated the downfall of Lucky City (unless you count Richard’s antics as the reason… which I don’t). That’s the biggest shame of all.

Make your way to Downtown Reidsville, NC on Friday, November 19th. It’s time for the “Old Fashioned Christmas” celebration from 6 to 8 PM. Christmas carols, the lighting of the Christmas Tree at Mural Park, and the telling of the Christmas Story. Santa Claus will make his arrival and there will be hot chocolate & cookies. There will be a gift certificate drawing at 7:55 PM and you must be present to win.

I’ve got a pretty good feeling that we’ll be broadcasting this event LIVE! on WGSR, but I hope to see you there in person!

I promise you’ll have a great time at the July Cruise-In.

If you’re a fan of classic cars and motorcycles, you’ll have a blast in downtown Reidsville on Friday, July 8th. If you couldn’t care less about classic cars and motorcycles, you’ll still have a blast. Even though there will be over 350 cars and motorcycles on display, there’s plenty more to see and do besides look at the vehicles. Most of the downtown businesses will be open, and the restaurants in downtown Reidsville are great.

Since the last Cruise-In, two new restaurants have opened up. Pete & Brenda’s Soul Food Cafe is now open in the former Short Sugar’s location (I’ve eaten there and it was very good, SC review coming soon) and The Cutting Board opened two weeks ago near the monument (I plan on eating there tomorrow before on-air time). Of course, you can’t beat the food and decor at Cafe 99. Carolina Cafe will be open as well and I really want to get one of their pork chop sandwiches. Finally, Mr. Kones has the best ice cream around

Enough about the food, there’s entertainment as well. Foxy Moxy will be performing at Lucky City, and that’s the place to be to have a world-class adult beverage. There will also be a DJ at Mural Park playing some of the best oldies around.

But wait, there’s more! WGSR will have our LIVE! coverage from 7 to 8 PM. If you can’t make it to the Cruise-In, be sure to watch it on Star News. Debbie Moore will be your hostess and I’ll help her start the show. Be sure to stop by and say “Hey!”

Make your way to downtown Reidsville NC tonight (Friday 5/14) and get ready to have a great time. The Cruise-In runs from 6 to 9 PM, but the fun starts earlier than that. During last month’s Cruise-In, cars started arriving around 4 PM. There’s plenty of parking on the side streets and in the city parking lots. One thing that I love about the Reidsville Cruise-Ins is that most of the downtown merchants will be open, including some of the best restaurants around. It’s my monthly chance to eat at Cafe 99 for dinner, and I won’t miss that opportunity.

Make your way to downtown Reidsville NC this Friday night from 6PM to 9PM (although the fun starts earlier as people start to arrive). You’ll have a great time looking at the classic cars from the EZ Street Cruisers Car Club and this year, they’re also featuring classic motorcycles. There’s going to be live music at the Mural Plaza with the lovely Veronica Jones entertaining the crowds, and lots of the downtown businesses will be open as well. This year’s Cruise-Ins are sponsored by Wolf Creek Harley-Davidson, the Reidsville Downtown Merchants’ Association and the Reidsville Downtown Corporation.

Cafe 99 will be open until 9 PM, and Friday night will be the season opening of Mr. Kones (a great ice cream/hot dog restaurant). Our friends at Lucky City will have a party going on as well, with the lovely Foxy Moxy hosting.

Mark Childrey & Debbie Moore will be hosting LIVE! on Star News (WGSR) from 7 PM to 8 PM, and they’ll be showing off some of the best cars and talking to the owners. You’ll be able to watch the broadcast streaming over the Internet if you can’t make it in person. I’ll be hosting the “Local Buzz” show from 4PM to 5PM, and we’ll be talking about Cruise-In preparations and may have some guests on. Thanks to one of our eagle-eyed Star News viewers, we were the first news source to bring you the story that someone had been shot at a Reidsville, NC, area motel on Thursday night, March 11.

We now know that one man was shot – identified as 28-year-old Dyson Anderson – and he’s currently in critical condition at an area hospital.

It all started on Thursday night at 6:28 – that’s when the Reidsville Police Department received a shots-fired call from the Colonial Inn and Suites on Barnes Street at the US 29 Bypass. Captain Ken Hanks tells Star News that when the first unit arrived on the scene, he found Dyson Anderson sitting in a vehicle in the back parking lot of the motel with gunshot wounds. Rockingham County’s EMS arrived on the scene and transported Dyson Anderson to an area hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Captain Hanks says the Reidsville Police need to find two black males spotted running from the vehicle immediately after the shooting. Anyone with information on this case can contact the Reidsville Police Department or Rockingham County Crime Stoppers.

Short Sugar’s in Reidsville closes its doors

The downtown Short Sugar’s closed early every day, so that meant anybody that wanted a great BBQ dinner had to go to the one on South Scales St. Because of the shortened hours, I never was able to go to this location. But don’t worry, there are still some great places to eat in downtown Reidsville. Cafe 99 has some of the best chicken salad around, and the Backstreet Buzz Coffee House offers some great grilled sandwiches. If I ever get to Reidsville before 2 PM, I’ve been told that the Carolina Cafe on Settle St. has excellent food.

Weird, eh? A “Happy Trails” about one restaurant turned into talk about 3 other ones.

It’s time once again for the sound of marching bands the dance troupes and the hearty HO-HO-HO of Santa Claus as his helpers once again bring in the Christmas season for Reidsville and Rockingham County. This year’s parade steps off Saturday, November 21st, starting at 6:30pm, and promises to be a celebration to remember. With the Market Square Park completed and the streets spiffed up, Reidsville will be dressed in its holiday finest for the occasion.

The theme of the parade this year is “A CRUISIN’ CHRISTMAS”. We will have a number of classic cars dressed for the season in the parade, and 50′s-60′s themes for
the units are more than welcome.

Two additional performance places have been established . . . In front of Pennrose Mall and the intersection of Richardson and South Scales Streets, in addition to the usual intersection of South Scales and Gilmer (where the TV cameras are).

If you can’t make it to Reidsville on Saturday night, you’ll be able to watch it on WGSR-TV (Star News). You can watch LIVE! on cable (Danville Comcast Channel 17 or Chatmoss Channel 14), over the air on digital channel 47.1 or LIVE! streaming video at their website. During the concert, Boswell was singing a Merle Haggard song [...]]]> Local favorite band “Matt Boswell & the Hillbilly Blues Band” won’t be performing in any more Reidsville city events.

Reidsville had their Fall Festival last Saturday and Matt Boswell & the Hillbilly Blues band” were one of the featured performers on the main stage. During the concert, Boswell was singing a Merle Haggard song on the Market Square stage and added “You can’t get married, you stupid gays and queers, so why don’t you go somewhere else?” to the lyrics. Not surprisingly, that seemed to have offended a few people. WGSR-TV broadcasted Boswell’s performance live and ran the taped performance on a regular basis, and that’s when a viewer wrote in asking that they edit out Boswell’s offensive lyrics. Reidsville city officials asked to review the tape after learning about the complaint. Reidsville’s city manager, Kelly Almond, said that “Market Square and all city venues are places to bring people together and not to divide them. We respect people’s free speech rights, but we don’t have to pay for it.”

Oopsie. What in the hell was he thinking?

Reidsville NC blocks off their downtown area and has a Fall Festival every year. This year’s event had plenty of exhibitors, crafters, food and entertainment. Add that to a classic car show with over 200 exhibitors and you get a great way to spend a fall day.

There’s so many things that went on during the Fall Festival, we’ll be splitting them off into their own articles. We met lots of people, ate lots of food, listened to great music… the list is endless. But we wanted to make sure you know one thing. It’s worth the drive from anywhere to attend this event. Diana Moran, president of the Reidsville Downtown Corporation, knows how to arrange a perfect event and her staff and volunteers ran it seamlessly. The folks from WGSR have really gotten good at covering events like this on a live basis.

Be watching for some more articles about the Reidsville Fall Festival over the next few days. Next year, make the trip to Reidsville, NC to attend this festival. You won’t regret it.

James Festerman won his mayoral race over Donald Gorham & Chuck Faint in Tuesday’s Reidsville elections. Festerman picked [...]]]> Congratulations to the incumbent mayor of Reidsville who won another term in office tonight! SouthsideCentral is now 1 for 1 in our endorsements this year. But we’ve got some questions about the City Council at-large elections.

James Festerman won his mayoral race over Donald Gorham & Chuck Faint in Tuesday’s Reidsville elections. Festerman picked up 48% of the vote hanging on over Gorham who pulled 46%. Faint came in a distant third with 6%. Fifty votes was all that spearated the top two candidates, so Faint’s total of 118 votes definitely had an effect on the election.

The Reidsville City Council at-large race was between six candidates with Tom Balsley & Richard Johnson winning seats on the council.

In a quick breakdown of the numbers, one thing really sticks out as mysteriously odd yet surprisingly familiar. There were 2147 votes total for mayor, and since each voter was able to vote for up to 2 candidates, the theoretical number of votes for the city council election should have been 4294. There were only 3678 total votes cast for the council race, so that’s 616 undervotes. That’s pretty good circumstantial evidence for bullet voting. We’re betting that tactical voting strategy propelled Richard Johnson to a rather sizable second-place (and seat-winning) margin of victory over Terresia Scoble.
