RandomThoughts! (12/21/18)

It’s the RandomThoughts! Special Holiday Edition. Of course, any time you get a SouthsideCentral website article, it’s a special occasion. Let’s go!

Let’s bring out a Holiday Big Board!

  • I go to Martinsville’s Uptown Pinball often, but I don’t talk much about it. That’s changing now. Mike Haley has done a spectacular job with his business idea and he’s expanded four times. Now he’s added the Free Play Cafe restaurant, and Uptown Pinball is now a complete destination for an entire day without going anywhere else.
  • I had high hopes for Alonzo Jones as Danville’s new mayor, and he’s surpassed all of my expectations. Danville’s mayor doesn’t do anything really different that a city councilman does except be the smiling face of the city. But damn, Alonzo has found his groove. He’s the best ambassador for the city in a long time, and I’m proud to call him my friend.
  • The 8th Annual “Trees For A Cause” has wrapped up at the Institute, and it’s been another showcase of beauty that helps non-profit groups in the area.
  • Speaking of “showcase”, I have to give thanks to Showcase Magazine for honoring me as a “Community Strong Person of the Year”.
  • I’m going to miss Karl Stauber & Debra Dodson as heads of their foundations. The region will miss them too.
  • Nana Karen’s is the best food truck in the region.
  • Steve DelGiorno is a frickin’ genius. He knows the restaurant business. He impresses me every time I see him. He’s hands-on at all of his businesses and he makes Crema & Vine one of the friendliest places in town.
  • Danville Mall sure was full of shoppers tonight. The mall isn’t closing. They’re going to be just fine.
  • URW Credit Union needs to build a new parking garage for all of the vehicles that they repossess.
  • I haven’t been to the new off-track betting location in Collinsville yet.
  • I haven’t been to a South Boston Speedway race night in four years, either.
  • I miss Dawn & John Ventimiglia, but I’m happy for them getting back to Wisconsin. Dawn was (and still is) my inspiration to explore and love the arts world.

Whoa. This article got big quickly. I’ll end it here.

We’ve got more coming up on SouthsideCentral and all of our social media channels. Thanks for your support, folks!
