Thumbs! (5/24/16)

Without Thumbs!, we’d be thumbless. That’s not good.

Yeah, I’ll explain the guidelines yet again. UP! is good. DOWN! is bad. Let’s pull out the Big Board!

  • Thumbs UP! to the River District Association. On Thursday, June 9th, the River District Association will be holding their Third Annual River District Scavenger Hunt and it’s going to be a lot of fun yet again. The hunt starts at 5:30 PM and you can get entries into the $500 cash drawing by visiting 15 different River District merchants and finding the items hidden in the stores. You can earn bonus entries by visiting more merchants and by making purchases that night. The drawing will be at 7:30 PM at the Main Street Plaza, and there will be music, games and ice cream at the finish line. The first two have been extremely fun and we’re looking forward to the 2016 version!
  • Thumbs UP! to the Register & Bee’s editorial board. Yes, you read that right. They nailed an editorial about Danville’s settlement with Duke Energy over the coal ash spill. They covered almost every point that I made in SouthsideCentral articles two weeks earlier. So that means that they had to get it right. After numerous letters to the editor that wanted the city to take Duke Energy for Lots-O-Money, the editorial smacked that down with the facts of how that wasn’t even possible.
  • Thumbs UP! to Sheila Baynes. After not winning a seat on Danville City Council, she’s continued to attend all of the meetings and also continues to make her voice heard on the current issues. It’s usually a sad tradition to watch losing candidates drop back into relative obscurity, but Baynes is out there and not going anywhere. That’s admirable.
  • Thumbs UP! to Dawn Ventimiglia. We’ve given her a Thumbs UP! before and she’s getting another one because we can, dammit. She’s one of the sweetest and most polite people that we know. She’s also an amazing artist who can do almost everything in various forms of arts. Go to her website and buy something that she’s created. Support a local artist. Nah, let’s say “Support one of the coolest local artists in the region”.

Heh. Look at that. All four are Thumbs UP! today. No red on this Big Board, baby! We’ve got more coming up here on SouthsideCentral!
