BreakDown: Danville City Council Campaign Funding (UPDATED)

Running a political campaign can be expensive, even at the local governmental level. So where is all of the major money coming from for this year’s Danville City Council election? SouthsideCentral has the answers after a lot of research. Let’s do a detailed look at each candidate’s contributions, starting with the incumbents and moving to the challengers.

We call this a BreakDown.

Monday was the last campaign finance report deadline before the May 3rd election. For each incumbent, we’ll look at the contributions over $100. Those are the ones that have to itemized with the donor’s name, address and work. We’ll also add any points of interest that we found on the reports. We’ve put the incumbents names into the Random.org list randomizer, and we’ll work through them in the randomized order. Away we go!


Fred Shanks:

  • Contributors over $100: Berkeley Bidgood – $250, Huntington Byrnes – $300, Tony Lundy – $600, Dianne McMahon – $250, John Shanks – $300, Thomas Taylor – $200, Robert Woodall – $300, William Gentry – $300, Dianne McMahon – $100
  • Notes: Shanks has loaned his own campaign $100. Shanks uses the Virginia State Board of Elections electronic filing method.

Sherman Saunders:

  • Contributors over $100: Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home – $2000
  • Notes: Saunders has paid a lot for advertising in this election, including $1687.50 to the Register & Bee, $1014.72 to WBTM and $1001 to WDVA.

Larry Campbell:

  • Contributors over $100: Lawrence Campbell Sr. – $200, Jane Dittmar – $500, Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home – $1500, Zachary Hairston – $150, Ben Rippe – $200, United Food & Commercial Workers International Union – $250
  • Notes: None.

Lee Vogler:

  • Contributions over $100: Berkeley Bidgood – $250, Steve DelGiornio – $175, Disruptor Capitol – $500, Catherine McCubbins – $500, Leonid Passov – $101
  • Notes: None.

Now, let’s look at the challengers. Robin Dabney is exempt from campaign finance reports because she has sworn that she will be under the $1000 reporting threshold for both contributions and expenses. We’ve randomized their names and away we go!

Philip Haley:

  • Contributions over $100: Phil & Terri Hall – $300, Charlie & Carol Majors – $250, William Gentry – $500, AKB Investment – $200, Philip Haley (himself) – $200
  • Notes: None.

Thomas Motley:

  • Contributions over $100: Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home – $1000, Thomas Motley (himself) – $127.68
  • Notes: None.

Trina McLaughlin:

  • Contributions over $100: Trina McLaughlin (herself) – $121, Toneisia Chase – $750
  • Notes: In-kind donation of $496 for signs from Denise Montgomery. McLaughlin uses the Virginia State Board of Elections electronic filing method.

Jim Lindley:

  • Contributions over $100: Jim Lindley (himself) – $1000, Janice Beachman – $100, Lucy Goode – $100, Richard Hines – $500
  • Notes: None.

Sheila Baynes:

  • Contributions over $100: None.
  • Notes: Baynes uses the Virginia State Board of Elections electronic filing method.

Madison Whittle:

  • Contributions over $100: Philip & Carol Daly – $200, Johnny Haymore – $200, Denise Derham – $1700, George Buchanan – $500
  • Notes: Whittle’s company “MJRW, Inc.” has loaned his campaign $8514.22 in total. Whittle also lists in-kind donations from  Golden Leaf Bistro ($587.66) & Comfort Inn & Suites ($1352.76) for meet & greet events.

Whew. There you have it. Reminder: Contributions under $100 are not itemized on campaign finance reports.
