Susan Davis’ Treasurer Announcement

Susan Davis has officially announced her candidacy for Danville City Treasurer. SouthsideCentral is glad to publish her statement unedited so that our readers can see it in its entirety.

Again, this is from Susan Davis.

Susan L. Davis for City Treasurer – Danville Born, Raised, and Educated

Per the Danville City website, “The Virginia Constitution created the elected office of Treasurer in 1870. The Treasurer’s independent status as an elected official ensures that local funds will be accounted for by an officer who reports directly to the people. The Treasurer’s primary responsibilities include collecting and accounting for revenues for the City of Danville and for the State of Virginia. It is our goal to provide the citizens of Danville with courteous, quality, and professional service.”

I am Susan L. Davis, and I am a candidate for the position of Danville City Treasurer. I believe that I am well qualified for this job. The majority of my education is the result of the great teachers in the Danville school system, as well as the work ethic instilled in me by my parents, Allan and Judy Davis. I started my school days at Woodberry Hills Elementary and finished in 1983 as a top ten honor graduate from George Washington High School.

My freshman year in college was at Virginia Tech as a student in the Engineering Program. I did well that year, but missed my family and friends in Danville. I transferred to Averett University where I graduated in 1987 with a BS degree in Math and Computer Science. I was also awarded the Dean’s Council Academic Achievement Award, which is bestowed upon the transfer student with the highest grade point average.

My main goal after graduating college was to find a position with a company that would utilize and build upon my education, and provide me with the much needed job experience. I acquired my first job in 1987 as a Software Analyst for Smith, Helms, Mulliss, and Moore (a NC law firm with offices in Cary, Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh). After a year of employment with the law firm, I accepted a position of Software Programmer/Analyst in 1988 at Dibrell Bros Inc., where I worked for two years.

In 1990, I accepted the position of Programmer/Analyst for the City of Danville. In this role I worked on numerous systems: Accounts Receivable, Budget, Collections System/Teller Terminals, Payroll, Random Jury Selection, and Utilities.
After eight years as a Programmer/Analyst, in 1998 I was promoted to the position of Application Support Supervisor. My duties in this capacity included: (1) continuing work on IT systems, (2) managing the Y2K conversion, (3) developing Help Desk Policies and Procedures, (4) ensuring the Application Team continued to grow and learn new skills, (5) assisting with unresolved Help Desk tickets. During my tenure as Application Support Supervisor, I obtained certification as a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer.
After 10 years at the City, I accepted a job with VF Corporation in 2000 as a Programmer/Analyst for the Project Lifecycle Management (PLM) team. VF is a global leader in branded lifestyle apparel, footwear and accessories – including brands such as JanSsport, Lee, Nautica, The North Face, VANs, and Wrangler.

I currently work as a Project Manager for VF. This includes activities such as requirements gathering, developing project timelines and budget, tracking project invoices and validating they are entered into SAP system correctly, communicating to the project team all project updates, and working with other teams (such as database and integration). The VF motto is to deliver projects “on time and on budget”. This applies to projects ranging from 8,000 dollars to multi-million dollar projects. Additionally, I am the “go-to girl” for technical problems and issues.

I am a very stable and driven individual which is evidenced by my employment with the city and VF. I achieved the education, skillset and experience to acquire jobs that had the propensity for advancement, and where I could make a difference.

I love living in Danville. For the past 15 years, I have commuted to Greensboro as I did not want to move away from Danville and its small town aura. The revitalization of the downtown area, with the new restaurants and JTI fountain, is a welcome change. The trail by the river showcases the beauty of the area. It’s great for exercising, picnicking, or just appreciating nature’s offerings.
I believe that the residents of Danville are the salt of the earth and strive to do their best. It’s very refreshing to see local groceries and restaurants acknowledged outside of this area; one prime example of this, is Midtown Market and their chicken salad. I find the residents of Danville to be independent minded people who want this area to mature and grow to its utmost potential – a community that works together, grows together.

In general, I am a detail oriented, compromising, hard-working and honest individual with the skill-set required for the position of Danville City Treasurer. I believe in the betterment of people, and I work well with other individuals and teams. I understand the importance of delegating responsibilities to others, and keeping communication lines open.

I feel that I have a lot to “bring to the table” if elected to this position. I am strong in my convictions; and I don’t change my opinions with the blowing winds. I believe in treating everyone as equals and with the utmost respect. I am a young, energetic, creative, and logical person. I believe that Danville is at a growth point, and I would like to participate in this exciting time. I am ready to give back to the community that has given so much to me. I’ve lived my entire life in Danville; and I will always have Danville’s best interest at heart.

I would appreciate your vote on May 3rd.

Warmest Regards,
Susan L. Davis
