Dr. Stan Jones’ Statement About GW Discipline Issues

SouthsideCentral is glad to publish the full text of Danville Public Schools Superintendent Stan Jones’s statement that he issued today about progress being made on discipline issues at George Washington High School.

Here’s the entire media release for you to read…

The top priority of Danville Public Schools is to ensure that our schools are safe and orderly and that the learning environment is not disrupted. In accordance with rules and regulations in the Danville Public Schools’ Standards for the Code of Conduct, measures to address classroom disruptions have resulted in:

  • 165 Out-of-School Suspensions at George Washington High School through the end of October. Suspension data for the month of November is being compiled and will be presented to the School Board at it the work session scheduled on December 17, 2015.
  • Since the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year, a total of 31 students have been recommended for Long-Term Suspension or Expulsion.
  • Students recommended for Long-Term Suspension or Expulsion may be assigned to the Langston Focus School as an alternative education placement for the duration of the suspension or expulsion.
  • Presently, there are 73 students enrolled at Langston Focus School alternative education program. Students who continue to significantly disrupt and defy the Code of Conduct will be placed in the alternative education program as a disciplinary consequence.
  • As indicated in the School Board meeting held last night, an additional 15 students are being assigned to the Langston Focus School as the result of continued violations of the Code of Student Conduct.

These efforts are aimed at improving the learning environment at George Washington High School. My staff and I are aware of these concerns and continue to work diligently with the staff at George Washington High School to address these issues firmly, fairly, and promptly.

  • Sounds like Dr. Jones stepped up to the plate to resolve a revolving problem at G.W. With continued observation and action I think the problem children will be weeded out and those students who see that there are consequences to miss- behaving, hopefully will think twice about doing so. Every student needs a chance to be educated without intended disruptions. Just my two cents worth.

What is the status of these 31 students?
