LightningRound! (9/25/15)

The clouds are moving in and we could use the rain. Let’s add a little Lightning to the mix. The LightningRound articles are mixups of things happening throughout the region that really aren’t big enough for their own article.

Hands on your buzzers, players. Let’s start the LightningRound!

And we’re underway…

  • Incumbent state senator Bill Stanley and his opponent Kim Adkins had the only forum of the campaign last night in Danville. It was sponsored by the NAACP and held at a church on Wendell Scott Blvd.  I didn’t get any notice about it (except from my friends), I didn’t see it advertised or promoted anywhere. I had no idea about it until 2 days before. Heck no, I didn’t go to it. Bill Stanley is running his reelection campaign on cruise control now, and it’s a smart political strategy for him to do as few forums/debates as possible. By accepting this one, he can say “Hey, I did one forum so I’m not hiding”. Stanley chose this one because he had absolutely nothing to lose. He knew that almost every person who would attend wasn’t planning on voting for him anyway. I like Kim Adkins. She’s a qualified candidate who’s personable and knows about the issues… but she’s heading towards a Bill Stanley Steamroller because her campaign hasn’t gotten any traction outside of the local Democratic parties (who were going to vote for her anyway). Stanley has 5X cash on hand vs. Adkins. Anyway, fooey on the whole thing.

Yeah, I said fooey. More Lightning!

  • I’m not sure how SouthsideCentral was on this mailing list, but I got a personally written email from “Aeyess” from the Tipline. I have no idea who Aeyess is, but they seem to know me. They’ve made a catchy song and video about the Donald Trump presidential campaign called “Make America Great Again”. Since it’s obviously a local person with talent and they answered my reply, I’m going to link to it here on SouthsideCentral. Who knows, maybe Donald Trump’s Twitter account will notice the mention and give this person some credit for their hard work. For a local production, this is pretty polished.

Moar Lightning!

  • I use the RottenReporting article category when regional media gets sloppy, lazy or doesn’t factcheck before publishing. I can’t use it for today’s R&B article titled “Hurt disappointed in redistricting case” because reporter Trevor Metcalfe’s story is filled with StupidReporting. Oh yeah, that’s a Register & Bee website link, and their paywall might block you out… unless you blow right past it of course.  The first paragraph sets the tome for the article when reporter Metcalfe tells us that House of Representatives member Robert Hurt “will comply with the eventual ruling” of the federal court on congressional redistricting. Well, damn. That’s some news there. Um… Robert Hurt has no choice but to “comply with the eventual ruling” because the Virginia State Board of Elections are going to conduct the election whether he complies or not. Of course, he’s going to “comply”. He doesn’t have a damned choice and neither does any other sitting Congressman. GAH! Of course, Metcalfe quotes Robert Hurt serving up a NothingBurger of his own with this quote… “The court will decide the process by which it will address the issues. We will have to see what the courts do.” If that quote was accurate, it came from Captain Obvious. Yep, Robert. The court has its own process. You can’t do anything until you see what the decision is. My IQ went down 7 points after reading Trevor Metcalfe’s article.

The LightningRound storm is over. Return to your homes. We’ve got more coming up on SouthsideCentral!
