Who’s #1? – Biggest Horsecrap Stories Of 2014 (Part 1)

Some things just never turn out to be as big as they’re originally hyped that they will be. Let’s do the first part of a countdown of Horsecrap Things that happened in the Southside region in 2014… that turned out to be pretty much nothing.

Who’s #1? Let’s start off with…

#6: Danville’s City Council Elections – We were going to have a big field of nine candidates for four seats. We only had three incumbents running with Adam Tomer stepping down! We’d finally have a strong campaign and lots of choices! Pfffft. Justin Ferrell withdrew from the race in less than a week because of address issues. Madison Whittle left the race soon after that. Joyce Glaise still thought it was 1998 and became unelectable. Thomas Motley’s campaign imploded (but he sure can sing good). The three incumbents were extremely strong and never in doubt, so the election turned into James Buckner vs. Dawn Witter for the final seat. Even then, Witter got torpedoed by Joyce Glaise’s bullet voting and never could statistically recover. That handed Buckner the 4th seat. Fooey. It had potential, but it turned out to be horsecrap.

#5: The Confederate Flag Issue – Don’t get me wrong. We had hours and hours of speakers on both sides of the issue. Unfortunately, most of them were telling us stories about things that had nothing to do with whether or not the flag should be moved inside the museum. The Final Decision was going to have to be made in six weeks. More speeches. More blah blah blah. The Final Decision was now only four weeks away. Even more speeches. Even more blah blah blah. The Final Decision would be made at the next council meeting two weeks away. WRONG! Thanks to a legal opinion from the City Attorney, City Council saw 4th and 27 on the scoreboard and punted that decision way down the field. The only interesting thing ended up being Larry Campbell tried a power play to get rid of the flag and was defeated. I want the five hours of my life back where I had to listen to those speakers. The flag issue and the Big Final Decision turned out to be horsecrap.

#4: Ed Newsome’s Supporters – The Danville School Board was fed up with Superintendent Ed Newsome. He had tried to circumvent their directives and he had little support from the teachers and administration. He Gots To Go. Oh My, they’re going to fire a black man Ed Newsome. Here comes all the Ed Newsome supporters  to the multiple called school board members. It’s amazing that 90% had never been to a school board meeting before and haven’t been back since Ed “retired”, but draw your own conclusions on that. When Ed was finally “retired” that night, all of his supporters just walked out and left. The “outrage from the black community” that was promised if Newsome got fired never happened. The “Citizens for Excellence in Education” group never was heard from again. All of that bluster turned out to be horsecrap.

That’s #6, #5 and #4. We’ve still got #3, #2 and #1 coming up in Part 2. We don’t stop ’til we reach the top! Stay tuned, Part #2 is coming up soon!
