CentralPerspective: The Dye Building & Smokestacks

This week, I want to share a photo of part of Dan River Inc.’s “Long Building” complex I shot on the northern shore of the Dan River in October 2008. The Dye Building and smokestacks would be demolished the following month as an additional step in the slow process of moving on from Danville’s old economy.

The photo below is of some graffiti art I noticed painted on the complex. It reads “There is always hope.” I remember the community being very divided on whether or not the remnants of Dan River Inc. be removed or preserved and I found myself torn between holding on to the past and moving toward the future. I’m still unsure of which is right. You can see more photos in my online gallery and I invite you to visit Bobby Roach Photography’s website to learn more about the company and its part in the future of Southern Virginia.
