Thumbs! (9/9/2014)

Thumbs! are powerful things.

We need that Big Board for our Thumbs!

  • Thumbs UP! to the Wild Blue River Festival! It’s the newest addition to the multitude of fall festivals in the region. Check out the Halifax Events website for more details on all of the things happening in the town of Halifax. We’ll see you there this coming Saturday (September 13th).
  • Thumbs UP! to Averett University’s Athletics Department. Holy bejeezus! They’ve got a football stadium with lights for night games and artificial turf. They’ve also got one of the most charismatic athletic directors I’ve ever met with Meg Stevens.
  • Finally, Thumbs UP! to the “no significant deposits of coal ash” finding when Danville lowered to the water level of the Dan River to inspect the Schoolfield dam. What? You didn’t see that in any press releases from those environmental groups? Surely, they’d be quite pleased to trumpet those findings? Yeah, me neither. I’m not surprised.

That’s some Thumbs! for now. We’ve got more coming on SouthsideCentral!

Bruce , was the coal ash cleaned up before they inspected or after?

O never mind I remember now Duke cleaned up on the top side of the dam where the equipment could get to the ash easily before they inspected. Remind me where is the intake for the city water?Yes they cleaned out 2900 tons of 39000 tons of what was spilt. No matter how much water has run over the dam since then there is still ash on the river bottom and will be for a long time. Go scuba diving in any river ( I recommend the Copper River so you can get a feel of what a current does) and you will learn what happens on the river bottoms and how stuff moves around and gets covered up from silt from upstream.Danville is being played in such a huge way by Duke on this and few really understand what really has happened.Even the environmental guy stated the ash just was not worth going after and the city council just sat here and congratulated him on the job he did overseeing the operation. This was after they were dazzled with the bottles of water they passed around with samples in them.I can not help but wonder how much negative effect to our reputation as the RIVER CITY has happen from this mess and we seem to be willing to sit back like it never happen since it is underwater and can not be seen. Now we are being requested for donations to clean up the river at the tune of 6 to 7 million. A city council member stated to me that there will be a settlement with Duke but he would not state how much, Maybe those 6 or 7 mill should come from that settlement.Just a little food for thought.
