RandomThoughts! (9/6/2014)

My goodness. It’s been a very long time since we thought randomly. We’ll fix that now.

Oh yeah, apologies for being so late with today’s article flow. We’ve upgraded SouthsideCentral to the new WordPress 4.0 and it took a while to work out the bugs.

Big Board, please!

  • I’m finding it quite strange that one of my commenters who’s given me a hard time (mainly about criticism of the school system) is making their postings from Greensboro. Who in Greensboro has such knowledge of the school system and such dislike for me & SouthsideCentral? Also, it seems like two distinct writing styles from two different people using the same IP address. Bizarre. Hmm.
  • Anyway… Is everything closing on the east end of Riverside Drive? Short Sugars, Libby Hill, Philly Cheesesteaks and now it seems that the used car lot (Motley’s?) on the corner of Riverside Drive & Arnett Blvd. has been emptied out.
  • Is Mama Possum’s open past 5 PM?
  • Every time I go into the Walgreens on Piney Forest Rd, there are less than two customers in the store. Anybody else have a different experience?
  • The traffic islands at that Walgreens/CVS/McDonald’s/Wendy’s intersection make drivers quite confused on how to get into those businesses.
  • Is anybody except the party faithful even caring about the 5th District US Congress election?
  • Wednesday, July 1st, 2015. Watermelon milkshakes will be back at Cookout. Those Cookout (CENSORED) ran out of watermelon two days early this year.
  • Fall Festivals are starting to roll. Eden’s RiverFest on September 19th & 20th is the tops in the region.
  • Speaking of that, anybody heard anything about Danville’s River District Festival? Me neither.

That’s some RandomThoughts. Feel free to comment!

It appears there will be a festival this year. It also appears that the Baguettaboutit truck won’t return sadly. I wish Danville would do something to actively recruit the regional food trucks to events.

    • I had a bad feeling last year when I saw no line at their truck and a $8 pricetag. Gah!

      • Jerry

It’s a nice festival. You’d think they’d be pouring on the promotion by this point as it’s only one month out.

        • Lee Smallwood

I seem to recall last year was pretty underwhelming in terms of features and attendance. This lack of promotion to me is a sign that it may not make it to the fifth annual festival next year. I sort of wondered if it was even going to happen when Bruce mentioned it which is why I went looking.

          • Jerry

BTW, go take a look at their Facebook page. There’s good and bad news. The good news is that there’s going to be a new bike race….so that’s something. The bad news is that they extended the deadline for vendors. That’s not a good sign unless they have more space for vendors this year.

I guess the River District Festival is caught between the Shrimpfest and Bright Leaf Brewfest…..both of which seem to get bigger every year in terms of attendance.

          • Lee Vogler

Actually attendance last year was bigger than the first two and they had more vendors. As far as this year is concerned, I couldn’t really say. I haven’t been involved this year but I’m sure it will still be a fun event.

          • Lee Smallwood

I’ve been in attendance at every version of this event, and it looked very sparsely attended to me last year. That certainly could have something to do with when I was there or perhaps because it did seem there were more vendors (but substantially fewer people interacting with them). Whatever it was, that was my impression.

            • The Children’s festival at the Carrington Pavilion had lots of things and drew a big crowd last year. Once you turned the corner and went up Bridge Street for the adult part… wah wah. To make it worse, their Saturday night headline act cancelled with < 48 hours notice leaving them with a foam party for Saturday night.

  • Andy from the Central Office

Kathy Osborne is attacking you under a fake name because you’re the only person to tell the truth.

    • Lee Smallwood

If it’s the commenter I think it is, it wouldn’t really make too much sense. Also, she seems to have been really nice to Bruce in person from the meetings…

    • Barbara T

She has one foot in Danville and the other in North Carolina. Those supporting her suffer from long term memory loss. She has never been a supporter of teachers and students nor an overall improvement of DPS. Unlike Newsome, she will not create a layer of administrators but will use Principals as a shield.

Danville needs a complete overhaul of its entire leadership teams. This includes City Council and School Board Members.

      • Lee Smallwood

Surely she’s not so weak that she couldn’t be bothered to use her own name to stand behind her views. That would go for her and whoever else might be left behind doing the work under the same pseudonym during the meetings themselves.

        • All I can say is that I find it quite interesting that someone from Greensboro dislikes Newsome and starts attacking me after I call out Osborne’s administration for “we could have done this better” on the “purge” incident.

          • Lee Smallwood

I would suggest that if there is a serious chance it is her, that sort of conduct (the hiding behind a pseudonym) I would find so galling as to disqualify her from any consideration as the head of an organization.

  • Carter

Perfectly obvious she is behind it. Surprised to see how long she got away with it. Thanks Andy.

  • Gus

I apologize if this has already been answered in a previous thread, but what actually happened to Libby Hill? Was it simply a major decline in the volume of business? It just seemed so sudden.

And thinking about the 5th District, I receive Hurt’s newsletter just to keep up to date on his perspective on the issues. Nothing in those newsletters or in anything he’s ever said has seemed particularly compelling; could’ve – and probably did – come straight from the party narrative factory. I’m surprised a more viable candidate hasn’t presented himself/herself for the 5th. Of course, the president would be a significant drag on any Democratic candidate running this year, so maybe the strong “maybes” decided to sit out this one?

  • Gus

Thanks for the update and insight. I used to patronize that place regularly when I was home visiting family. Looking forward to trying out a few of the new dining options in town the next time I’m there, particularly the ones downtown.
