RandomThoughts! (7/4/2014)

This is my mind. Walk inside, please…

RandomThoughts are best served on a Big Board…

  • Best place to see Danville’s 4th of July fireworks show? My backyard, suckers! (But I’ll still go down to the 58/Old Halifax Rd. intersection anyway).
  • Danville’s 4th of July celebration used to be all day long at the Carrington Pavilion. It’s been scaled back to a 6PM starting time this year.
  • Last year’s pie-baking contest had a quite appropriate prize of a new oven. This yeah, the winner gets a $500 gift certificate to the Golden Leaf Bistro. That will buy you about four slices of pie there.
  • We’re going to make it a whole day without mentioning Ed Newsome in a SouthsideCentral article (this mention doesn’t count).
  • Although I understand why, there’s something wrong with having to pay an extra $5 on a traffic ticket for the system that gives you the tickets more efficiently.
  • The annual Hot Dog Eating Championship is completely unwatchable to me.
  • Nobody seems to give a damn about the two Henry County drug-related murders last weekend (except the sheriff’s department).
  • Is there any local programming on WMDV 44.2 anymore besides David Wilson’s one hour show?
  • I need some help for a Blast From The Past. The Diskay store? My sister says it was in Nor-Dan Shopping Center. I barely remember it and was thinking it was in the Riverside Shopping Center. Anybody?
  • What store was in the Riverside Shopping Center before the old Big Lots opened up?

RandomThoughts and RandomQuestions all in one article! More coming up on SouthsideCentral!

Diskay was in Nor Dan. Roses was in riverside.

The memory is rusty, but Thalheimers had a store on that end of the shopping center and it seems that they might have occupied part or all of the old Big Lots location.

The question that comes to mind about the $5 fee is why there is no sunset after this technology is paid for. It has the feel of becoming a slush fund for DPD to me.

Danville had a hotdog eating contest a few years ago. It was a nail biter. The winner got a trophy that you bring back each year to defend the title. People complained about the contest afterwards. Guess he got to keep it. That’s when they went to pies instead.

Diskay was between Woolworth’s and Champion’s Toyland in the area where all the State offices are located now. Thalhimers was on the corner next to Western Auto, People’s Drug Store and Krogers, later Bestway, later Farmer’s Food. That entire end of the Shopping Center was torn down and rebuilt for the Winn Dixie Marketplace which later became Piggly Wiggly and now has become vacant space. That is all.
