RandomThoughts! (6/11/2014)

In a world where people have Thoughts, only a few do it in Random style… (That’s best read in a booming movie trailer type of voice)

There’s five days of RandomThoughts to catch up on, so we’ll need a Big Board.

  • Danville’s Libby Hill seafood restaurant finally closed. It was a mercy killing because the quality and service had gone down significantly over the past few years.
  • You know what two types of businesses Danville needs more of? Mexican restaurants and mattress stores! Ugh.
  • I’ve lived in Danville for most of my life but I still don’t know the names of the side streets in Downtown Danville without having to look them up.
  • It’s worth the occasional drive to Reidsville to get deli, bakery and meat items from their Lowes’ Foods grocery store. Just be sure that you sign up and use their loyalty card program. Their prices are horribly high if the item you want to buy isn’t on promotion.
  • There were six customers inside Dick’s Sporting Goods Monday at 6:00 PM. There were only about 40 in Target.
  • The novelty, wonder and long lines at the Murphy USA gas station really disappeared as soon as they normalized their prices. They’re now priced directly in line with the big gas stations on South Boston Rd.
  • Another publicity hit for the Halifax County School Board with a lawsuit being filed against them. That deserves its own article, and we’ll have that later today.
  • The North Carolina Visitors Center at the intersection of 29 South and Route 700 is a great place to visit. It’s full of interesting things to look at, you’ll learn a lot about places to visit and the staff is terrific. What does Virginia have to greet our visitors on our side of the line? A line of low-priced motels and a lottery store.
  • You can’t beat South Boston Speedway for a Saturday night entertainment venue. The prices are reasonable, the atmosphere is exciting and the food’s awesome.
  • Blast from the very past. I miss Jim & Laura Hill’s “L.J. Giggles” restaurant and homemade ice cream shop in the Ballou Park shopping center. Yes, that was almost 30 years ago.

That’s enough RandomThoughts for now. More coming up on SouthsideCentral!

Apparently this isn’t as common knowledge as I figured it would be since an excited colleague of mine noticed my GoDanRiver comment about it, but here we go:

According to the developer of Coleman Marketplace, who maintains a promotional website for the property, Sleepy’s is moving to the outparcel closer to Golden Corral next to the side street that gets you from Central to Home Depot. On the other side, Zaxby’s is opening a Danville location. I am excited as I can be about Zaxby’s. When I lived in Georgia, it was way more popular than Chik-fil-a was.
