We couldn’t handle the truth?

Maybe that’s what law enforcement was thinking, because we’re now finding out a fatal wreck back in June stemmed from a police chase.

Does anybody remember this story from back in late June?

UPDATE: Victim identified in deadly Pittsylvania County crash

I remember thinking that it’s so sad for a 19-year-old to be killed in a car wreck. Based on what the state police spokesman said, it looked like another run-of-the-mill tragic auto accident fatality.

I was quite wrong on that thought.

Keeling man charged in fatal crash

That changes things… a lot. I’ve got my opinion of high-speed police chases, but that’s not relevant here. What we do have is a major omission of facts from the state police spokesman, and that’s quite improper on something like this. I could possible see that they were trying to protect the victim’s family, but the truth is the truth and it needed to have been put forward a lot quicker than this. When Halifax County had a police chase that ended up in a fatality, Sheriff Fred Clark was quick to put forward all the information including what deputy initiated the chase and why he did so. As I’ve said earlier, Halifax County Sheriff Fred Clark “Gets It”.

The life of the driver of the car is ruined because he’s going to constantly remember running from the police and killing his friend in the ensuing wreck. Now he’s facing criminal charges that will hang him with felony convictions for the rest of his life and probably a jail sentence as well. Now that I know the full circumstances of the wreck, it’s hard for me to feel any sympathy at all for the guy who ran from the police.

One person is dead because his friend ran from the police. The guy who ran from the police and killed his friend in the wreck has ruined his life. Some member of law enforcement is going to have to live with the reality that the pursuit he initiated killed somebody. The state police failed to provide a lot of important information, and that omission was big enough to completely change my viewpoint on what I thought was just a tragic situation.

This story sucks in every way possible.
