Clean Energy Workshop in Martinsville tonight

Tom Perriello will be speaking at tonight’s event.

From a press release…

What: Today, April 1st community members will be gathering at Nationwide Homes in Martinsville to hear Congressman Tom Perriello speak about clean energy and thank him for supporting clean energy jobs in the Southside. Community members will be showing support for clean energy jobs and asking questions regarding energy issues in Virginia. Small businesses, veterans, public officials, and everyday people are supporting a strong clean energy plan for America that will strengthen the economy and create clean energy jobs. The agricultural and manufacturing history makes this area especially well suited to creating clean energy jobs. Several entrepreneurs across the district have already begun to create some of those jobs that can start putting Southside residents back to work. After Rep. Perriello speaks, citizens will participate in the workshop by learning how to work with a legislator and hearing about local clean energy educational opportunities and business initiatives.

Who: Speakers include Congressman Tom Perriello, local Martinsville business owner Brain Brown of Renewable Engineered Systems, John Cook of Valley Energy Consultants, Environment Virginia director J.R Tolbert, and Director of the Academic and Outreach programs at Danville Institute for Advanced Research, Julie Brown.

Where: Nationwide Homes, 1100 Rives Rd., Martinsville, VA

When: Thursday, April 1st from 6-8pm

More Information: The Sierra Club’s Clean Energy Jobs Campaign is working to pass a strong national clean energy plan that creates millions of jobs, strengthens national security and reduces global warming pollution. Such a plan will help propel Southside Virginia into the forefront of the clean energy economy, by transitioning it from a from the leading textile and tobacco region it was, to the future clean energy leader it can be.

Now for my comments on this. As I’ve said before, for events like this I don’t care whether you like Tom Perrielo or not. All I care about is the jobs that can come to the Southside VA area with clean energy technologies. I’ve seen the research that’s going on at Danville’s Institute for Advanced Learning & Research and I’ve seen the potential that it can bring to this region’s economy. All I ask is for you to put aside the politics for a while and check out what can be done with this emerging technology. If you like what you see, show some support.

I’m looking at this issue without politics involved. I hope you can.

bruce: I live in Lunenburg & we need jobs, too.

but this clean energy concept is part of cap ‘n trade which will make energy unaffordable for many. and the regulations, mandates & taxes associated with it will kill what few jobs are left in Southern/Southside Virginia.

don’t get me wrong: this sounds great. But Tom Perriello is the same man who told us that Obamacare will reduce the deficit & create jobs (did he mean the 16,500 IRS positions?). He is not credible.

Kelley: I just don’t really know the truth of the effects of the “cap and trade” legislation. I do believe that it can’t be as horrible as some of the most avid critics paint it to be. I just don’t know.

All I do know on this is that bioenergy is a technology that Southside can greatly benefit from.

As for the credibility of Tom Perriello… not sure on that either. He’s not an evil genius trying to fool us all, yet I am highly disappointed in his vote on health care.

bruce: Obama himself said that if cap ‘n trade legislation was passed, electric rates would skyrocket. even SEn Rockefeller of WV is beginning to see that such legislation would shut down coal mines in his state.

at the august townhall in Kenbridge, Perriello was asked about the ill effects of cap ‘n trade (high prices of energy, onerous regs on businesses, etc). his response went something like this: well, yeah, all that is true. But this is America & I feel certain that an American will develop a solution to this that is cheap & doesn’t pollute.

many in that crowd sat dumbfounded. so we all sit around in the dark while someone at CalTech gets the EPA & the other zillion regulatory agencies to approve something? like let’s grow corn to fuel motor vehicles while people in Africa starve. duh.

but Bruce, this is a cap ‘n trade discussion. I read that bill, too. its not pretty.
