Interesting: One of the regular members since last summer of the library's Young Adult Book Club is a registered sex offender. I am not going to mention anyone's name here, but the registration is a matter of public record with the Virginia State Police. I am looking at it at this very moment. I stopped by the club often since it was begun last April to see what the kids were doing and saw the person in question there nearly every time. The offender's registration was renewed last November, while the 20-year-old was still an active member of the club. I should point out---and emphasize---that this club was neither organized nor overseen by Woodson Hughes but by other library personnel.

The answer to this entire affair is simple: We need an entirely new library board.

21, Grievance policy, states he had 10 days to appeal the Board of Trustees. Rhonda said nothing can be done since it has been 19 days, to date, since Woodson was forced to resign. This states nothing about re-hiring an employee.

The deal about waiving fees is no where mentioned in the policy.

"29. Public Relations: Public relations involves every person connected with the Library. Therefore, it is expected that every Board and staff member have a clear understanding of the Library's objectives and policies. Board and staff members must remember that they represent the Library in every contact and should take an active interest in community affairs.

It is the responsibility of the Library staff to create an atmosphere that is welcoming, helpful and pleasant. No staff member should ever be so engrossed in work that a patron is given only superficial attention or vice versa."

This policy alone is grounds to remove Speece from the Board and fire, or at least reprimand, Griffin. Griffin has created an atmosphere of distrust and community outrage. Her attention to patrons is nil, especially in confronting the patrons' questions about the hasty forced resignation of Woodson.

Woodson lived this policy! He never hesitated to help. There are several grumps working there now; I hope Griffin is making them aware of their errors.
