16½ feet wide, 225 feet long and over 500000 pounds…

Insert your own joke for that headline, but a truck/trailer combo of that size is going to be heading through Danville at least three times over the next week.

A titanium forging press is on its way to RTI International Metals in Henry County. It’s so big it’s going to take three trips from the Port of Newport News to Martinsville, with the route going from Newport News to Richmond to Charlottesville. After that, it will head down Route 29 until it hits the Danville Expressway. It then heads to Martinsville on Route 58. (Gee, wonder why a truck that big can’t come straight across 58?)

Along the path, some bridges will have to be shut down to traffic and some power lines will have to be temporarily moved to get this load to its destination. The truck/trailer combo will be making three back-and-forth trips between today and July 23rd and will only be traveling from 6:30 PM and 6:30 AM. SouthsideCentral would love to get photos of this behemoth but nobody seems to know exactly when it’s scheduled to come through. We do know that Miller Trucking, VDOT and DMV have detailed a travel plan for this shipment and have even scheduled the rest stops.

More to come if we can find anything else about this…
